Jimmy McAlinden
James McAlinden (27 December 1917 – 15 November 1993) was an Irish footballer who played as a forward for several clubs, most notably, Belfast Celtic, Portsmouth, Shamrock Rovers and Southend United. As an international, McAlinden also played for both Ireland teams – the IFA XI and the FAI XI. After retiring as a player, he went on to manage Glenavon, Distillery and Drogheda United. Club career Belfast Celtic In 1934, aged 16, McAlinden was playing for Glentoran Reserves, when after a game against their reserves, he was offered a professional contract by Belfast Celtic. McAlinden, together with Jackie Vernon, Tommy Breen, Billy McMillan and Charlie Tully, subsequently became a prominent member of the Celtic team managed by Elisha Scott. Charles Patrick Tully (11 July 1924 – 27 July 1971) was a Northern Irish football player and manager who played for Celtic. FAI Cup
The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Sports Direct FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City F.C., Derry City from Northern Ireland). Organised by the FAI (Football Association of Ireland), the competition is currently sponsored by ''Sports Direct''. It was known as the Free State Cup from 1923 to 1936. Shamrock Rovers F.C., Shamrock Rovers hold the record of most wins with 25. Tommy Eglington
Thomas Joseph Eglington (15 January 1923 – 18 February 2004) was an Irish footballer who played as an outside-left for, among others, Shamrock Rovers, Everton and Tranmere Rovers. Eglington was also a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. Eglington's playing career followed a similar path to that of Peter Farrell. As well as teaming up at international level, they also played together at three clubs. Eglington was best known as a creator of chances, for his acceleration down the wing and for his ability to deliver a precise pass at speed. He also possessed a powerful shot. He remains one of Everton's all-time top scorers and has played more games in the Second Division than any other Everton player. Peter Farrell (Irish Footballer)
Peter Desmond Farrell (16 August 1922 – 16 March 1999) was an Irish association football, footballer who played as a right-half for, among others, Shamrock Rovers F.C., Shamrock Rovers, Everton F.C., Everton and Tranmere Rovers F.C., Tranmere Rovers. As an international, Farrell also played for both Ireland teams – the Republic of Ireland national football team, FAI XI and the Ireland national football team (1882–1950), IFA XI. In 1949 he was a member of the FAI XI that defeated England national football team, England England v Ireland (1949), 2–0 at Goodison Park, becoming the first non-UK team to beat England at home. Paddy Coad
Paddy Coad (14 April 1920 – 8 March 1992) was an Irish football player and manager. He played as a forward for Waterford, Glenavon, Shamrock Rovers and Ireland. Although known, primarily, as a maker of goals, Coad scored 126 goals in the League of Ireland and a further 41 in the FAI Cup. In 1946–47, he was top goalscorer in the League of Ireland. As a player manager, he also guided Shamrock Rovers to three League of Ireland titles and two FAI Cups, before he returned to Waterford and guided them to their first league title in 1966. He was appointed manager of Limerick in September 1967. Early years Coad was educated at De La Salle school in Stephen Street in Waterford and first distinguished himself as a sportsman playing hurling and table tennis. Glenmalure Park
Glenmalure Park, often simply known as Milltown, was a football stadium on the Southside of Dublin city in Ireland. Located in the suburb of Milltown, it was home to Shamrock Rovers from 1926 to 1987, when it was sold to property developers by the club's directors. It is now a housing estate called Glenmalure Square. Ringsend to Milltown Shamrock Rovers moved from the inner city area of Ringsend in the early 20th century to the then semi-rural suburb of Milltown. In Milltown, Rovers secured a long-term lease of land from the Jesuit Order, who were based in the area. The club's ground there was largely built by their supporters, who constructed the main stand and banked the areas on the other three sides. It was officially opened on Sunday 19 September 1926, with a friendly game against Belfast Celtic in front of a crowd of 18,000.
