Jimmy Eddery
Jimmy Eddery (1922–1988) was an Irish jockey, who won the 1955 Irish Derby and was twice Irish flat racing Champion Jockey. He was also father of several jockey sons, of whom Pat was most successful, becoming champion on both sides of the Irish Sea. Career James Eddery was born in Doneraile, Co. Cork on 25 July 1922, one of several jockey brothers, of whom he was the most successful. He served his apprenticeship with Atty Persse in Hampshire, before returning home to Ireland at the start of World War II, having immediate success for trainers like Fred Myerscough. In 1944, he dead-heated for the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Good Morning and the Irish Cambridgeshire on Dawros. He won the former outright the following year on Stalino. In 1946, he succeeded Morny Wing as first jockey to Seamus McGrath. He was successful on Panaslipper in the 1955 Irish Derby, having been beaten into second at 100/1 in the Epsom equivalent. Doneraile
Doneraile (), historically Dunnerail, is a town in County Cork, Ireland. It is on the R581 regional road east of the N20 road, which runs from Limerick to Cork. It is about north of Mallow town. It is on the River Awbeg, a branch of the Blackwater. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name. Doneraile is part of the Cork East Dáil constituency. Name The town sits on the northern slope of Knockacur hill, which rises by a gentle slope from the Awbeg river and gradually ascends to a rocky prominence. However, it was not this rocky prominence but one near the graveyard of Oldcourt which together with an ancient fort built thereon, gave the town its name, Doneraile, i.e. "Dún ar Aill", meaning "the fort on the cliff". British Flat Racing Champion Jockey
The champion jockey of flat racing in Great Britain is the rider who has the most wins during a season. For most of its existence, the jockeys championship was decided on the number of winners ridden between Lincoln Handicap Day and November Handicap Day, the traditional flat turf season. In 2015, it was announced that the title would be decided over a reduced timescale – the start of the Guineas Meeting and British Champions Day, roughly 24 instead of 32 weeks. A prize of £25,000 to the champion jockey and £10,000 to the runner up was also introduced as part of the 2015 changes. Oaks Stakes
The Oaks Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres), about 1½ miles, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June. It is the second-oldest of the five Classic races, after the St Leger. Officially the Betfred Oaks, it is also popularly known as simply The Oaks. It has increasingly come to be referred to as the Epsom Oaks in both the UK and overseas countries, although 'Epsom' is not part of the official title of the race.
