Jim Ryan (writer)
James Francis Ryan (April 21, 1936 – August 31, 2022) was an American screenwriter in the DePatie–Freleng Enterprises, also the Filmation studios and Hanna–Barbera. Career Ryan began his career at DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, where he penned episodes of '' The Inspector'' and scripted the ''Pink Panther'' short '' Psychedelic Pink''. At Filmation, he wrote for several cartoons alongside writing partner Bill Danch, including '' Mission: Magic!'' (starring Rick Springfield), '' Shazam!'', one of Ryan's few forays into live action, and '' Fabulous Funnies''. Ryan and Danch were head writers of ''The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty''. His most notable contribution at the studio was ''Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids''. Ryan wrote early episodes of the series as well as a Christmas special. ''Fabulous Funnies'' is a 1978–79 American Saturday morning animated TV series produced by Filmation. The show aired for one season from September 9, 1978, to December 1, 1978, on NBC, airing 13 episodes. The show is an anthology of stories based on American comic strips, including '' Broom Hilda'', ''Alley Oop'', '' The Captain and the Kids'', '' Nancy'', '' Emmy Lou'' and (for one episode) ''Tumbleweeds''.The character designs closely mimic the comic strips, so the animators had to animate in several different styles for the program. It was noted by critics that the show's comic potential was blunted by NBC's demand that the show promote pro-social messages for the child audience. This was especially noticeable when rowdy characters like ''The Captain and the Kids'' were obliged to spread messages of politeness and restraint.
