Jim Pope
Jim Pope (2 October 1933 – 18 August 2001) was an English radio and television continuity announcer and voice over artist. He began his career in radio and moved to TV to deliver continuity links for HTV in the 1960s and early 1970s. Pope later moved to Granada TV where he devoted his career as a continuity announcer and newsreader of ''Granada Reports'' bulletins. His most well known contemporaries were Charles Foster and Colin Weston. While working primarily as a continuity announcer, he also voiced Granada-produced trails and promos for the ITV network and was a narrator for the highly regarded current affairs programme, ''World in Action''. Pope was also known for providing the voice-over announcements for Granada's University Challenge. Continuity Announcer
In broadcasting, continuity or presentation (or station break in the U.S. and Canada) is announcements, messages and graphics played by the broadcaster between specific programmes. It typically includes programme schedules, announcement of the programme immediately following and trailers or descriptions of forthcoming programmes. Continuity can be spoken by an announcer or displayed in text over graphics. On television continuity generally coincides with a display of the broadcaster's logo or ident. Advertisements are generally not considered part of continuity because they are advertising another company. ITV Wales & West
ITV Wales and West, previously known as Harlech Television (HTV), was an ITV franchise area in the United Kingdom until 31 December 2013, licensed to a broadcaster by the regulator Ofcom. There is no channel, past or present, named "ITV Wales and West". The licence relates to a "dual region", meaning that the franchise area was divided into two sub-regions, Wales and the West of England, each of which had to be served by distinct and separate ITV programme services, as more fully defined within the licence. From January 2014, the dual-region licence was split in two, with ITV Cymru Wales for Wales and ITV West Country covering the both the West of England sub-region and South West England. Granada TV
ITV Granada, formerly known as Granada Television, is the ITV franchisee for the North West of England and Isle of Man. From 1956 to 1968 it broadcast to both the north west and Yorkshire but only on weekdays as ABC Weekend Television was its weekend counterpart. Granada's parent company Granada plc later bought several other regional ITV stations and, in 2004, merged with Carlton Communications to form ITV plc. Granada Television was particularly noted by critics for the distinctive northern and "social realism" character of many of its network programmes, as well as the high quality of its drama and documentaries. ITV News ''Granada Reports'' is a British television news service broadcast and produced by ITV Granada. Colin Weston
Colin Weston (born 26 July 1948), is an English broadcaster, best known for his work at Granada Television and Tyne Tees Television. Born in London, he attended Streatham Modern School in Lambeth. Upon leaving school, he began working in the press and publicity department of ABC Weekend TV's studios in Teddington and stayed with the company for four years. After ABC lost its weekend franchises in 1968, he applied for various continuity announcing roles around the ITV network. Weston was successful at Granada, which had won the seven-day franchise for North West England. He was trained by then-chief announcer Don Murray Henderson. However, on his first announcing shift, he earned the nickname ''Fluff'' after forgetting the name of the Winter Hill transmitter during the opening authority announcement, despite it being taped to his desk. ''World in Action'' was a British investigative current affairs programme made by Granada Television for ITV from 7 January 1963 until 7 December 1998. Its campaigning journalism frequently had a major impact on events of the day. Its production teams often took audacious risks, and the programme gained a solid reputation for its often unorthodox approach. The series was sold around the world and won numerous awards. In its heyday ''World in Action'' drew audiences of up to 23 million in Britain alone, equivalent to almost half the population. Cabinet ministers fell to its probings. University Challenge
''University Challenge'' is a British television quiz programme which first aired in 1962. ''University Challenge'' aired for 913 episodes on ITV from 21 September 1962 to 31 December 1987, presented by quizmaster Bamber Gascoigne. The BBC revived the programme on 21 September 1994 with Jeremy Paxman as the quizmaster. Paxman will relinquish his role as host following the conclusion of the 52nd series in 2023, after which he will be succeeded by Amol Rajan. In October 2022, an ITV documentary, ''Paxman: Putting Up With Parkinson's'', revealed how the disease has impacted him and revealed that Paxman recorded his very last episode of ''University Challenge'' on 15 October 2022, which is to air sometime in 2023. Bamber Gascoigne
Arthur Bamber Gascoigne (24 January 1935 – 8 February 2022) was an English television presenter and author. He was the original quizmaster on ''University Challenge'', which initially ran from 1962 to 1987. Early life and education Gascoigne was born in London on 24 January 1935. He was the elder son of Lieutenant-Colonel Derek Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne by his marriage in 1934 to Mary ("Midi") Louisa Hermione O'Neill. Gascoigne was educated at Sunningdale School in Berkshire before winning scholarships to both Eton College and Magdalene College, Cambridge (1955), where he read English literature. He initially wanted to become an actor, though found it tiresome to have to play the same part for more than a week, so instead turned to writing. Jeremy Dickson Paxman (born 11 May 1950) is an English broadcaster, journalist, author, and television presenter. Born in Leeds, Paxman was educated at Malvern College and St Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he edited the undergraduate newspaper ''Varsity''. At Cambridge, he was a member of a Labour Party club and described himself as a socialist, although in later life described himself as a one-nation conservative. ''G.B.H.'' is a seven-part Television in the United Kingdom, British television drama written by Alan Bleasdale shown in the summer of 1991 on Channel 4. Described by Bleasdale as "one caring, liberal madman's odyssey through the appalling farce of life in Britain today", its protagonists are Michael Murray (played by Robert Lindsay (actor), Robert Lindsay), the hard-left Labour Party (UK), Labour leader of a city council in the North of England, and Jim Nelson (played by Michael Palin), the headmaster of a special school. Roger Tilling
Roger Tilling (born 17 October 1971, in Hertfordshire, England) is a British voice-over artist, voice actor and broadcaster. Biography Tilling is a graduate of Queen Mary University of London. He holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is a qualified private pilot. He began his broadcasting career in local radio. He worked at Chiltern Radio in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire and Oasis Radio (later Mercury 96.6 and Heart Hertfordshire) in Hertfordshire in 1995.
