Jim Phillips (American Football)
James Jackson "Red" Phillips (February 5, 1936 – March 25, 2015) was an American professional football player who was a wide receiver for 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) from 1958 to 1967. He was a three-time Pro Bowler as a Ram from 1960 to 1962 and was a first-team All-Pro in 1961. Phillips played college football for the Auburn Tigers. He was named a unanimous All-American his senior year at Auburn, when he was co-captain of their 1957 national championship team. NFL career As a rookie in 1958, Phillips led the NFL with the longest reception for that season: 93 yards. In 1961, he led the NFL in total receptions with 78 and ranked third in the league with 1,092 receiving yards. 1958 NFL Season
The 1958 NFL season was the 39th regular season of the National Football League. The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants, 23–17, in the first sudden-death overtime in an NFL Championship Game. NFL Championship
Throughout its history, the National Football league (NFL) and other rival American football leagues have used several different formats to determine their league champions, including a period of inter-league matchups to determine a true national champion. Following its founding in Canton, Ohio (1920), the NFL first determined champions through end-of-season standings, switching to a playoff system in 1933 (a one-game playoff was required in 1932).
