Jim Manson (Australian Footballer)
James Henry Manson (2 November 1937 – 20 May 2010) was an Australian rules football player and local government politician from Tasmania, Australia. Manson played 210 games for Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL) club Glenorchy as a ruckman and forward, winning their best and fairest award in 1964. Following the end of his playing career, Manson commentated on Tasmanian Football League matches for Hobart television station TVT6's (later known as Tas-TV and WIN) ''World Of Sport'' program from the 1970s until the early 1990s. Manson was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2009. Manson was first elected to the Glenorchy City Council in 1996 and served as the council's deputy mayor from 2005 until his death. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an Australian rules football playing field, oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the Football (ball)#Australian rules football, oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Tasmanian Football Hall Of Fame
The Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame was established to help recognise outstanding services and overall contribution made to the sport of Australian rules football in Tasmania. Any participant of the sport, including players, umpires, media personalities and coaches, may be inducted. A physical hall was established in 2005 after the Tasmanian Community Fund provided a $50,000 grant to assist AFL Tasmania and the Launceston City Council with establishment of a permanent facility at York Park. The decision to locate the Hall of Fame at the ground was because the site had recently been redeveloped and was positioned as the "true home of Tasmanian football". AFL Tasmania initiated the Hall of Fame nomination process, with a number of clubs, players and grounds nominated and accepted into the Hall of Fame since 2005. The 1990 AFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Collingwood Football Club and the Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 6 October 1990. James Manson (Australian Footballer)
James Manson (born 2 November 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL/AFL for Collingwood and Fitzroy. From North Hobart Football Club in Tasmania, Manson provided some great assets to Collingwood Magpies. Manson stood at 194 cm and was solidly built (108 kg) with a great overhead mark. He had a very awkward kicking style, with the action very different from most footballers, as he overlooked the ball with a cramped style as he dropped it on the boot. He kicked over 100 goals with the Magpies. Manson was part of the 1990 premiership side, and had a key role in the finals series. Manson played as a ruckman who moved forward, or the other way around. With young ruckman Damian Monkhorst also at Victoria Park, Manson struggled to maintain his position in the team later in his career as 'Monkey' developed each season. TVT (TV Station)
TVT is Tasmania's first television station, delivering its first official broadcast on 23 May 1960. The callsign stands for "TeleVision Tasmania". Unlike the commercial stations in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and later Perth, TVT held a monopoly in the Hobart market for many years (not unlike CTC (TV station), CTC in Canberra and NTD (Australian TV station), NTD in Darwin). Initially it broadcast from the Mount Wellington, Tasmania, Mount Wellington transmitter on VHF channel 6, to all of Hobart. Its broadcast licence area covered all of southern Tasmania, these areas being reached by various repeaters and retransmitters. It continued to broadcast as TVT-6 until 1982, where it was bought by ENT Ltd, ENT, owner of Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston station TNT-9.
