Jim Larkin (politician)
Alexander James Larkin (born September 13, 1946) is a Canadian politician and businessman. He represented 6th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1979 to 1982 as a Progressive Conservative. Larkin was born in 1946 in St. Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island. He married Helen Elizabeth MacDonald in 1971. Larkin graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Science degree. Prior to entering politics, Larkin was the coordinator of the Prince Edward Island Federation of Municipalities. He also worked as the general manager of the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island and served on the executive of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada. Larkin first attempted to enter provincial politics in the 1978 election, but was defeated by Liberal incumbent John H. Maloney. Legislative Assembly Of Prince Edward Island
The Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island (french: Assemblée législative de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is the sole chamber of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The Legislative Assembly meets at Province House, which is located at the intersection of Richmond and Great George Streets in Charlottetown. 6th Queens was an electoral district in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, which elected two members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1966 to 1993. John Paul Connolly (born June 22, 1946) is a Canadian former educator and politician. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in the 1982 provincial election and represented the electoral district of 6th Queens from 1982 to 1996, followed by Charlottetown-Rochford Square from 1996 to 2000. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", "Birthplace of Confederation" and "Cradle of Confederation". Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a public university in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the only university in the province. Founded in 1969, the enabling legislation is the ''University Act, R.S.P.E.I 2000.'' History The university traces its roots back to 1804, when Lt. Governor Edmund Fanning and the Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island called for the establishment of Kent College. The 1979 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 23, 1979. The election was held just one year after the 1978 election, which featured a 17–15 split in MLAs in the legislature. Following the resignation of former premier Alex Campbell from his seat, the Legislature was in a 15–15 tie in voting members (the Liberal Speaker, Russell Perry, could not cast active votes in his role), the new Premier Bennett Campbell decided to call an election in an effort to regain his lost majority. The gambit failed, and instead the Progressive Conservatives led by Angus MacLean formed a strong majority government. The 1982 Prince Edward Island general election was held on September 27, 1982. In 1981, after just two years as premier, Angus MacLean resigned his position after the election of James Lee to the Progressive Conservative leadership. In the same year, the Liberals selected future premier Joe Ghiz as their leader.
