Jim Cotter (curler)
James H. Cotter (born October 15, 1974 in Kamloops, British Columbia) is a Canadian curler from Vernon, British Columbia. He currently coaches the Corryn Brown rink. Career Cotter grew up in Kamloops, playing both curling and baseball as a youth. As a high school student, he won three provincial high school championships (1990, 1991, 1993). He won two provincial junior crowns, in 1990 and in 1995. At the 1990 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, he skipped the B.C. team to a 6-5 round robin record. This put them in a five-way tie for third place. They would be eliminated from the playoffs however, when they lost their first tie-breaker match to Nova Scotia's Brian Fowlie. Five years later in his last year of eligibility, Cotter was back, skipping the B.C. team at the 1995 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. 2017 Players' Championship
The 2017 WestJet Players' Championship was held from April 11 to 16 at Ryerson's Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. It was the seventh men's and sixth women's Grand Slam event of the 2016–17 curling season. Sweden's Niklas Edin won the men's event, becoming the first non-Canadian skip to do so. On the women's side, Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones won her six Players' title, the most for any female skip. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide #Curling stone, stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area that is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The goal is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. John Morris (curler)
John C. Morris (born December 16, 1978; nicknamed "Johnny Mo") is a Canadian curler, and two-time Olympic gold medallist from Canmore, Alberta. Morris played third for the Kevin Martin team until April 24, 2013. Morris, author of the book ''Fit to Curl'', is the son of Maureen and Earle Morris, inventor of the "Stabilizer" curling broom. Morris grew up in Gloucester, Ontario (now part of Ottawa) and at the age of five began curling at the Navy Curling Club. Career Junior career As a junior curler, Morris skipped his Ottawa Curling Club rink to three-straight Ontario provincial junior Men's titles from 1997 to 1999, and won the 1998 and 1999 Canadian and World Junior Championships, setting records for most wins by a skip along the way. 2012 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2012 Tim Hortons Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 3 to March 11 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This Brier marked the sixth time that Saskatoon hosted the Brier; the last time that the Brier was hosted in Saskatoon was in 2004. The winner of the Brier, Glenn Howard, represented Canada at the 2012 Capital One World Men's Curling Championship in Basel, Switzerland. In the final, Ontario's Glenn Howard defeated Kevin Koe in ten ends with a score of 7–6. Howard won his fourth Brier title overall and his second Brier title as skip. Ontario third Wayne Middaugh became the first person in Brier history to win at three different positions, as second in 1993, as skip in 1998, and as third in 2012. 2011 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2011 Tim Hortons Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held March 5 until March 13, 2011 at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, London, Ontario. This event marked the 30th time that the province of Ontario has hosted the Brier since it began in 1927 in Toronto, Ontario and the first time a Bronze Medal Game was added to the playoffs. In the final, Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton defeated Ontario's Glenn Howard 8–6. Team Manitoba were nearly perfect in the game, curling a record 96%. The team led 4–2 after 5, and stole two points in the sixth to take a 6–2 lead, after Howard was light on a draw. Stoughton's win was the first win for Manitoba in 12 years, when he last won the event, and was the 27th title for the province. A total of 8,261 spectators were on hand to watch the final. Glenn Howard
Glenn William Howard (born July 17, 1962) is a retired Canadian curler who is one of the most decorated curlers of all time. He has won four world championships, four Briers and 17 Ontario provincial championships, including a record eight straight, from 2006 to 2013. He has made 20 Brier appearances, playing in a total of 227 games, the third most of any curler. He has won a career 14 Grand Slams, won the 2001 TSN and 2013 Dominion All-Star Skin Games and the 2010 Canada Cup of Curling. He currently coaches his son Scott Howard's Ontario rink. Career Early career Howard began curling at around the age of 10. Howard lost two straight Ontario Junior Championship finals in 1980 and 1981, skipping a rink out of Midland, Ontario. The 2008 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's men's curling championship, was held from March 8 to 16 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Skipped by Kevin Martin, Alberta defeated the defending champion, and reigning World Champion Glenn Howard and Team Ontario. The final pitted arguably the top 2 teams in the world, at least the top 2 teams in the World Curling Tour. The final, while close, failed to live up to expectations, and was widely considered boring, and was full of mistakes due to ice problems. Martin had a draw to the button in the tenth end to win the game. Bob Ursel
Robert (Bob) "Bobby" Ursel (born February 12, 1965) is a Canadian curler and curling coach. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ursel lives of Kelowna, British Columbia. Curling career After finishing 6–5 at the 1983 Canadian Junior Men's Curling Championship, Ursel skipped his native Manitoba to a Canadian Junior Curling Championship In 1984. The following year, he skipped the Canadian Junior Team to a World Junior Curling Championship title. That team was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. It would be 15 years out of junior that Ursel would finally make it to the Brier. He played third for Bert Gretzinger's 1999 British Columbia team. They finished 5-6. In 2002 Ursel moved to play third for Pat Ryan where he made the 2003 Nokia Brier. At the 2003 Brier, the team lost in the semi-final to Nova Scotia (skipped by Mark Dacey). Pat Ryan (curler)
Patrick J. C. Ryan (born September 28, 1955 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian curler originally from Edmonton, Alberta. Ryan is a former World Champion skip, and three time Brier champion. Ryan lives in Kelowna, British Columbia. Career Ryan appeared in his first Brier in 1979 when he was the second for Paul Devlin's Alberta team. They finished 6-5. In 1985, Ryan returned to the Brier, as a skip of Team Alberta. His team of Gord Trenchie, Don McKenzie, and Don Walchuk had an impressive 11-1 performance, their only loss coming in the final against Al Hackner of Northern Ontario. Two years later, Ryan would return to the Brier. His new team, which included Randy Ferbey (whom he played with at the 1986 Canadian Mixed Championship) and Roy Herbert along with Walchuk finished with a disappointing 6-5 record. 1995 Canadian Junior Curling Championships
The 1995 Canadian Junior Curling Championships were held February 4–12 at the Caledonian Curling Club in Regina, Saskatchewan. For the women's event, prior to 1994, the winner of the Canadian Junior Curling Championships would go on to play in the following season's World Junior Curling Championships. However, the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) made a rule change where the winner of the Canadian Junior Curling Championships would advance to Worlds in the same season. As a result, Jennifer Jones did not get the opportunity to play in the 1995 World Junior Curling Championships after her victory in the 1994 Canadian Junior Curling Championships because of the rule change. Instead, Jones' 1994 championship team was given a berth as top seed directly into the semifinals, where she lost to former teammate Kelly MacKenzie.
