Jim Allen (artist)
William Robert "Jim" Allen (born 22 July 1922) is a New Zealand visual artist. In the 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to education and the arts. In October 2007, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Auckland University of Technology, and in 2015 he was named an Arts Foundation Icon, limited to 20 living people, by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Allen turned 100 in July 2022, which was celebrated by the Auckland Art Gallery in an exhibition of his works from 19 July to 28 November 2022. Early life and war service Allen was born in Wellington, New Zealand. From 1940 to 1945, Allen served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in North Africa and Italy as a truck driver, motorcycle rider, and machine gunner. Wellington ( mi, Te Whanganui-a-Tara or ) is the capital city of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. 2016 Kaikōura Earthquake
The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was a magnitude 7.8 (Mw) earthquake in the South Island of New Zealand that occurred two minutes after midnight on 14 November 2016 NZDT (11:02 on 13 November UTC). Ruptures occurred on multiple faults and the earthquake has been described as the "most complex earthquake ever studied". The earthquake started at about north-east of Culverden and south-west of the tourist town of Kaikōura and at a depth of approximately 15 kilometres (9 mi). The complex sequence of ruptures lasted for about two minutes. The cumulative magnitude of the ruptures was 7.8, with the largest amount of that energy released far to the north of the epicentre. Over $1.8 billion in insurance claims were received. There were two deaths, in Kaikōura and Mount Lyford. Statue Of Wairaka
The Statue of Wairaka (also known as ''The Lady on the Rock'') is located at Whakatāne Heads in Whakatāne, New Zealand. Wairaka was the daughter of Toroa, the captain and navigator of the '' Mātaatua'' waka (canoe) which travelled from Hawaiki to present-day New Zealand. When the ''Mātaatua'' first arrived in the Whakatāne region, the men left the women alone in the canoe while they went ashore. The canoe started to drift back to sea, and although women were forbidden from handling a canoe, Wairaka picked up a paddle and led the women to paddle the canoe back to shore. As she did so, she called out "Kia Whakatāne au i ahau’ – I will act the part of a man." The statue was commissioned by Sir William Sullivan, a former mayor of Whakatāne, following his wife Lady Sullivan's death in 1963.
