Jigen
is a fictional character created by Monkey Punch for his manga series ''Lupin III'', which debuted in ''Weekly Manga Action'' on August 10, 1967. Jigen is the marksman, aide-de-camp and best friend of Arsène Lupin III. Along with colleague Goemon Ishikawa XIII, he joins Lupin in pursuit of riches acquired typically by theft. Traveling across the globe, Jigen has garnered fame as a gunman with wildly capable speed and accuracy. Creation and conception According to Monkey Punch, Jigen was created as a New York raised American gangster based on actor James Coburn, especially his role in ''The Magnificent Seven''. When the series was adapted into animation, the role was portrayed by Kiyoshi Kobayashi, the voice actor responsible for dubbing many of Coburn's roles into Japanese. The character's name comes from Monkey Punch's love for the word "dimension," which translates to "jigen" in Japanese. Kiyoshi Kobayashi
was a Japanese actor, voice actor and narrator from Tokyo. He was attached to the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society. He was a graduate of the arts department of Nihon University. He was best known for his role as Daisuke Jigen in the '' Lupin the Third'' series, voicing the character for over 50 years. He also voiced roles in '' Humanoid Monster Bem'' (as Bem), the ''Droopy'' cartoons (as the Wolf) and '' Shazzan'' (as Shazzan); Kobayashi was the official dub-over voice of James Coburn and Lee Marvin for Japan. History Since junior high school, Kobayashi had excelled in English and had vague aspirations of becoming a writer in the future. After graduating from high school, he took the entrance examination for the University of Tokyo, but failed because he took the French literature course instead of the English literature course due to the trend at the time, and also failed in his re-take the following year. This is a list of television specials of the Japanese media franchise ''Lupin III'', based on the manga series by Monkey Punch that debuted in 1967. Beginning in 1989 with ''Bye Bye, Lady Liberty'', every year until 2013 featured a 90 minute ''Lupin III'' anime television special that aired on NTV at 9:03 on Friday evening. Since then, they have been released irregularly, with the 27th and latest being November 2019's ''Prison of the Past''. Each television special features its own unique story, with plots generally centering on the adventures of gentleman thief Lupin III, and his criminal gang: Daisuke Jigen, crack-shot and Lupin's closest ally; Fujiko Mine, femme fatale and love interest who works against Lupin more often than with him; and Goemon Ishikawa XIII, a master swordsman and descendant of legendary Japanese bandit Ishikawa Goemon.
