The Jatiya Sangsad (), often simply referred to as Sangsad and also known as is the unicameral Legislature, legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament (Bangladesh), members of Parliament, or MPs. The 2024 Bangladeshi general election, 12th national parliamentary election was held on 7 January 2024. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. Jatiya Party (Ershad)
The Jatiya Party (, ; JaPa or JP(E)) is a political party of Bangladesh. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammed Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of opposition. History The party was established by military ruler, Hussain Muhammad Ershad on 1 January 1986. He was the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army. He had seized power through a coup d'état on 24 March 1982. He ruled the country as its chief martial law administrator. 2014 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 5 January 2014, in accordance with the constitutional requirement that elections must take place within the 90-day period before the expiration of the term of the Jatiya Sangshad on 24 January 2014. The elections were not free and fair. They were preceded by a government crackdown on the opposition, with Bangladesh Nationalist Party and opposition leader Khaleda Zia put under house arrest. There were widespread arrests of other opposition members, violence and strikes by the opposition, attacks on religious minorities, and extrajudicial killings by the government, with around 21 people killed on election day. Almost all major opposition parties boycotted the elections, resulting in 153 of the 300 directly elected seats being uncontested and the incumbent Awami League-led Grand Alliance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina winning a landslide majority. Sheikh Afil Uddin
Sheikh Afil Uddin (born 6 May 1966) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Jessore-1 constituency. Early life Afil Uddin was born on 6 May 1966. His father, Sheikh Akij Uddin, is the founder of Akij Group. He is also related to fellow member of parliament Manirul Islam Monir, Monirul Islam Monir. Career Afil Uddin was elected to parliament in 2008. He was reelected to government in the 5 January 2014 elections unopposed. In the elections, a voice recording of his emerged in which he appeared to instruct fellow Awami League candidates on how to rig the elections. Afil Uddin was re-elected in 2018 with 325,793 votes from Jessore-2 while his nearest rival, Abu Sayed Muhammad Shahadat Hussain of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, received 13,940 votes.
