Jerry S. Palazolo of Memphis, Tennessee, is a collector and expert of postage stamps and postal history of the Confederate States of America. He is also owner of a retail wine and liquor business. Collecting interests Palazolo is a collector with knowledge of all aspects of postal history of the Confederate States of America. However, he specializes in the study of postal history of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, from the founding of postal systems in those areas and on through 1869. Philatelic activity Jerry Palazolo has served as editor and co-editor of various philatelic handbooks and catalogues. He has amassed a library of philatelic literature of over one thousand documents. August Dietz
August Dietz (October 19, 1869 – September 26, 1963) was a philatelist, editor and publisher, who specialized in the study of mail and postal history of the Confederate States of America. Early life Dietz was born in Prussia on October 19, 1869. He moved to Richmond, Virginia, in the United States in 1871, and began his collecting of postage stamps in 1888. He died September 26, 1963, in Richmond, Virginia. Philatelic career Because he was a trained lithographer and typographer, and because he had access to some of the postal sources of the Confederate States of America, he became interested in the postage and philatelic history of the Confederate States. Postage Stamps And Postal History Of The Confederate States
The postage stamps and postal system of the Confederate States of America carried the mail of the Confederacy for a brief period in American history. Early in 1861 when South Carolina no longer considered itself part of the Union and demanded that the U.S. Army abandon Fort Sumter, plans for a Confederate postal system were already underway. Indeed, the Confederate Post office was established on February 21, 1861; and it was not until April 12 that the American Civil War officially began, when the Confederate Army fired upon US soldiers who had refused to abandon the fort. However, the United States Post Office Department continued to handle the mail of the seceded states as usual during the first weeks of the war.
