Jerry Kane
Jeremiah Kane (October 11, 1865 – October 25, 1948) was a professional baseball player. He played from 1888–1890 in Major League Baseball as a first baseman and catcher for the St. Louis Browns in . After his playing career, Kane was a minor league baseball manager for several teams. He went on to have a career in politics in his hometown of East St. Louis, Illinois. Kane served as chairman for the Illinois State Democratic Committee from 1906 to 1914, after completing two four-year terms as the comptroller for East St. Louis. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes.
