Jerome Kavka
Jerome Kavka (October 9, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois – May 14, 2012 in Oakland, California) was a supervising and training analyst at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. From the early 1990s until 2006, he also served as archivist for the Institute. Biography Kavka was of Polish Jewish ancestry, born in Chicago, Illinois after his parents had emigrated from Poland. He graduated from Marshall High School in Chicago's West Side and proceeded to obtain bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a young intern at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., immediately after World War II, Kavka treated poet Ezra Pound. Pound was "vigorously and viciously anti-Semitic" and "quite crazy, but Jerry, who was Jewish, managed still to talk to him," said colleague and student Arnold Goldberg of him later. The Medical Corps (MC) of the U.S. Army is a staff corps (non-combat specialty branch) of the U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) consisting of commissioned medical officers – physicians with either an M.D. or a D.O. degree, at least one year of post-graduate clinical training, and a state medical license. The MC traces its earliest origins to the first physicians recruited by the Medical Department of the Army, created by the Second Continental Congress in 1775. The US Congress made official the designation "Medical Corps" in 1908, although the term had long been in use informally among the Medical Department's regular physicians. Currently, the MC consists of over 4,400 active duty physicians representing all the specialties and subspecialties of civilian medicine. The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, formerly the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Society and Institute is a facility for psychoanalytic research, training, and education located on 2420 Sutter St. in San Francisco, California. The precursor of the SFCP was a society founded in 1941-1942 as the ''California Psychoanalytic Society'' (CPS) with branches in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. The CPS was under the sponsorship and supervision of the Topeka society, which at that time had jurisdiction over all psychoanalytic institutes in the United States west of Kansas. Kavka's Toxin Puzzle
Kavka's toxin puzzle is a thought experiment about the possibility of forming an intention to perform an act which, following from reason, is an action one would not actually perform. It was presented by moral and political philosopher Gregory S. Kavka in "The Toxin Puzzle" (1983), and grew out of his work in deterrence theory and mutual assured destruction. The puzzle Kavka's original version of the puzzle is the following: An eccentric billionaire places before you a vial of toxin that, if you drink it, will make you painfully ill for a day, but will not threaten your life or have any lasting effects.
