Jeremy G. Butler
Jeremy G. Butler (born 1954) is a scholar of television and film, an author, and radio show host on Alabama Public Radio. He is a professor emeritus of film studies at the University of Alabama. Butler has also taught at Northwestern University and the University of Arizona. In 1991, he founded the still-active Screen-L mailing list for academic film and television studies. Butler also created and maintains ScreenSite for film/TV studies and ScreenLex, a pronunciation guide. His University of Alabama profile page says he has a B.A. from Brown University and received an M.A. and PhD from Northwestern University. Much of his work focuses on television studies. He has written on various subjects including television, ''Miami Vice'', and film scholar Chuck Kleinhans. He wrote a book on television style. Alabama Public Radio
Alabama Public Radio (APR) is a network of public radio stations based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, that serves roughly the western half of the state of Alabama with classical music, folk music, and nostalgic music programs, as well as news and feature programs from the National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), and American Public Media (APM) networks. The network is operated by the University of Alabama, with studios in Tuscaloosa. Chuck Kleinhans
Chuck Kleinhans (October 2, 1942December 14, 2017) was an associate professor of film studies at Northwestern University for 32 years and co-founded ''Jump Cut'' with Julia Lesage and John Hess. He co-edited the journal from its inception in 1974 until his death. In 2007, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies awarded him its Outstanding Pedagogical Achievement Award. Early life and education Charles Nelson Kleinhans was born in a working-class neighborhood of Chicago. In the early 1950s, his family moved to suburban Park Ridge. He graduated from Maine Township High School in 1960, a classmate of Harrison Ford. He then enrolled in the University of Wisconsin–Madison, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in comparative literature. Kleinhans was in NROTC in college and after graduating was obligated to spend two years in the Navy. Film studies is an academic discipline that deals with various theoretical, historical, and critical approaches to cinema as an art form and a medium. It is sometimes subsumed within media studies and is often compared to television studies. Film studies is less concerned with advancing proficiency in film production than it is with exploring the narrative, artistic, cultural, economic, and political implications of the cinema. ''Miami Vice'' is an American crime drama television series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann for NBC. Television Studies
Television studies is an academic discipline that deals with critical approaches to television. Usually, it is distinguished from mass communication research, which tends to approach the topic from a social sciences perspective. Defining the field is problematic; some institutions and syllabuses do not distinguish it from media studies or classify it as a subfield of popular culture studies. One form of television studies is roughly equivalent to the longer-standing discipline of film studies in that it is often concerned with textual analysis yet other approaches center more on the social functions of television.
