Jeopardy (album)
''Jeopardy'' is the debut studio album by the English post-punk band the Sound. It was released in November 1980 through the record label Korova. The album fared poorly commercially, only reaching No. 23 in New Zealand, but received critical acclaim. One single, "Heyday", was released from the album. Background Following their 1979 EP ''Physical World'', the band started work on a full-length album. Impressed by the rough mixes, Korova signed the group. ''Jeopardy'' was recorded inexpensively at Elephant Studios in London, and was produced by the Sound themselves and Nick Robbins. Adrian Janes, ex-member of the Outsiders along with Sound frontman Adrian Borland and Bob Lawrence, contributed writing to two tracks, despite not being a member of the Sound. The Sound (band)
The Sound were an English post-punk band, formed in South London in 1979 and dissolved in 1988. They were fronted by Adrian Borland, and evolved from his previous band, the Outsiders. While never commercially successful, the Sound have long been championed by critics. Background Beginnings The Sound were formed in South London in 1979 from the remnants of the punk band the Outsiders. The original lineup of the Sound consisted of Adrian Borland (vocals, guitar) and Graham Bailey (bass guitar), both ex-Outsiders, along with Mike Dudley (drums) and woodwinds player Bi Marshall (born Benita Biltoo). While not a member, ex-Outsider Adrian Janes would contribute ideas and co-write lyrics to the Sound's music. ''Music Week'' is a trade publication for the UK record industry distributed via a website and a monthly print magazine. It is published by Future. History Founded in 1959 as ''Record Retailer'', it relaunched on 18 March 1972 as ''Music Week''. Dead Can Dance
Dead Can Dance are a British-Australian band founded in Melbourne in 1981 by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, before relocating to London the following year. The Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance's style as "constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; Music of Africa, African polyrhythms, Celtic music, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Middle Eastern music, mantras, and art rock." Having temporarily disbanded in 1998, they reunited in 2005 for a world tour, and again in 2011 to release and tour the album ''Anastasis (album), Anastasis''. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Devon Powers (born 1977 or 1978) is an American communication studies professor, author, and former music journalist. Biography Powers was born in 1977 or 1978. Her father, Lee R. Powers, is an engineer and her mother, Mandy Powers, is a nurse. In 2007 she married lawyer David Bennion. Powers is African American. It ran from 1978 to 2006, and, after initially appearing monthly, was issued fortnightly during most of that time. "In the City" is the debut single by English band the Jam from their album of the same title. It was released on 29 April 1977 and reached No. 40 on the UK Singles Chart in May 1977, making it their first Top 40 single and the beginning of their streak of 18 consecutive Top 40 singles. While the album was not particularly successful in the UK Albums Chart, the song was the UK's first introduction to The Jam, and was characteristic of Paul Weller's youth anthems—mod-influenced celebrations of British youth—that dominated the band's early output.
