Jennings Carnegie Public Library
The Jennings Carnegie Public Library is a Carnegie library located at 303 North Cary Avenue in Jennings, Louisiana. It is operated by the City of Jennings. The library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 8, 1982. History The Jennings Carnegie Public Library is the oldest established library in the state of Louisiana. In 1889 the Jennings Ladies' Library Association opened the first public library in Jennings, Louisiana. The first structure burned down in 1901, leading the association to purchase the site and request financial support for a new library from the Carnegie Library program. With a donation of $10,000 and the city providing funding, support, and maintenance, the women were allowed to proceed with the project. The new building was built in 1908. Jennings, Louisiana
Jennings is a city in, and the parish seat of, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, United States, near Lake Charles. The population was 10,383 at the 2010 census, a small decline from the 2000 tabulation. Jennings is the principal city of the Jennings Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Jefferson Davis Parish. It is also part of the larger Lake Charles-Jennings Combined Statistical Area. It is also part of the large, 22-parish Acadiana region of the state, with a large Francophone population, many descended from early Acadian settlers. History For whom the town was named, Jennings McComb was an Irish contractor for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He built the Jennings depot on a divide peculiar to the southwest Louisiana. Whitfield & King was an architectural partnership of Henry Davis Whitfield and Beverly Sedgwick King (1876–1935). A number of the firm's works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
