Jenkins Cavaliers
The Jenkins Cavaliers were a minor league baseball team based in Jenkins, Kentucky. From 1948 to 1951, Jenkins played exclusively as members of the Class D level Mountain States League. The Cavaliers hosted home minor league games at the Jenkins Athletic Field. History The 1948 Jenkins Cavaliers began minor league play as members of the Class D level Mountain States League. The "Cavaliers" was also the moniker of the local Jenkins High School and remains so today. The Cavaliers joined fellow league members, the Harlan Smokies, Hazard Bombers, Morristown Red Sox, Newport Canners and Pennington Gap Miners in the six–team league. In their first season of play in 1948, the Jenkins Cavaliers finished with a record of 35–78 placing 6th and last in the league standings. Bob Bowman (pitcher)
Robert James Bowman (October 3, 1910 – September 4, 1972) was an American professional baseball player. The native of Keystone, West Virginia, a right-handed pitcher, played all or portions of four Major League Baseball seasons (–) as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Chicago Cubs. For his career, he compiled a 26–17 record in 109 appearances, 71 of them as a relief pitcher, with nine saves, 13 complete games, two shutouts, a 3.82 earned run average and 146 strikeouts in 365 innings pitched. He allowed 360 hits and 139 bases on balls. Bowman is most noted as being the pitcher who in June 1940 beaned former Cardinal teammate Joe Medwick, an incident that nearly cost Medwick his life. Tom McBride (baseball)
Thomas Raymond McBride (November 2, 1914 – December 26, 2001) was a professional baseball outfielder. He played all or part of six seasons in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox (1943–47) and Washington Senators (1947–48). He also played extensively in minor league baseball. His professional career spanned sixteen seasons, from 1936 until 1951. Boston Red Sox McBride's busiest and best major league season was 1945 when he appeared in 100 games for Boston and made 374 plate appearances. He hit .305 (105-for-344) with 1 home run, 47 runs batted in, and 38 runs scored. Also that season he tied a major league record with 6 RBI in the 4th inning on August 4 (game 2). In that game against the Washington Senators he hit a bases-loaded double and a bases-loaded triple. McBride's 7 triples that season tied him for eighth in the American League.
