Jeju 4.3 Peace Park () is a memorial park and museum in , Jeju City, Jeju Province, South Korea. It commemorates the victims of the 1948–1949 Jeju uprising. After a January 2000 act issued by the Jeju 4.3 Committee, efforts began to construct the park. Designs were finalized in June 2001, and the land purchase was completed in 2002. A groundbreaking ceremony began on April 3, 2003. Infrastructure was completed in November 2005. The Peace Park opened on March 28, 2008. The park consists of a park and a museum to the uprising. Jeju Uprising
The Jeju uprising (in South Korea, the ''Jeju April 3 incident'', ) was an insurrection on Jeju Island, South Korea from April 1948 to May 1949. A year prior to its start, residents of Jeju had begun protesting elections scheduled by the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea (UNTCOK) to be held in the United States-occupied half of Korea, which they believed would entrench the division of the country. A general strike was later organized by the Workers' Party of South Korea (WPSK) from February to March 1948. The WPSK launched an insurgency in April 1948, attacking police and Northwest Youth League members stationed on Jeju who had been mobilized to suppress the protests by force. The First Republic of Korea under President Syngman Rhee escalated the suppression of the uprising from August 1948, declaring martial law in November and beginning an "eradication campaign" against rebel forces in the rural areas of Jeju in March 1949, defeating them within two months. ... Encyclopedia Of Korean Local Culture
The ''Encyclopedia of Korean Local Culture'' (EKLC; ; abbreviated 향문) is an online encyclopedia operated by the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) and the Ministry of Education, which are in turn supported by the South Korean government. , it is subdivided into 230 regional encyclopedias, with 111 of them considered to be complete. The various regional encyclopedias are located at subdomains of the main "grandculture.net" domain. The encyclopedia began compilation in 2003. The first regional encyclopedia to be completed was that for Seongnam. Cost and efforts to produce these encyclopedias is shared between the South Korean government and the governments of each region covered. However, the completion and maintenance of the encyclopedias has been hampered by budgetary constraints.
