Jeffrey Kopstein
Jeffrey Stephen Kopstein (born 1962) is an American social scientist who specializes in interethnic violence, anti-liberal tendencies, and minority voting patterns with a focus on Jewish history in Russia and Europe. Kopstein received his PhD at University of California, Berkeley in 1991, subsequently held various positions at University of Colorado Boulder until 2002, subsequently at University of Toronto where he was a full professor until 2015, and from 2015 at University of California, Irvine, where he is Professor and Chair of Political Science. Kopstein's recent research has focused on why Jews were massacred by the local populations in Eastern Europe during 1941 (in some 10 percent of localities), while in other localities the locals did not kill Jews on a wide scale despite the German encouragement. Szczuczyn Pogrom
Szczuczyn pogrom was the massacre of some 300 Jews in the community of Szczuczyn carried out by its Polish inhabitants in June 1941 after the town was bypassed by the invading German soldiers in the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. The June massacre was stopped by German soldiers after Jewish women bribed them to intervene. A subsequent massacre by Poles in July killed some 100 Jews, and following the German Gestapo takeover in August 1941 some 600 Jews were killed by the Germans, the remaining Jews placed in a ghetto, and subsequently sent to Treblinka extermination camp. Historical background Some 56% of the town's 4,502 inhabitants were Jews prior to the war. At the outbreak of the Second World War Szczuczyn was briefly occupied by German forces, who sent 350 men, mostly Jewish, to forced labor. Only 30 returned after five months. The Act on the Institute of National Remembrance – Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation () is a 1998 Polish law that created the Institute of National Remembrance. This memory law was amended twice, in 2007 and 2018. The 1998 Act's Article 55 criminalized historical negationism of crimes committed against Poles or Polish citizens by Nazi or communist polities; of crimes against peace or humanity; of war crimes; and of political repression—all these being listed in Sections 1 a and 1 b of Article 1.
