Jeffrey Frame
Jeffrey W. Frame is an American atmospheric scientist and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is known for observational and modeling studies of severe convective storms and for teaching meteorology. He was a scientist for VORTEX2 and other field research programs. Early life and education Frame is from Michigan. He and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan (UM) with a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences in 2001. Moving on to the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) for graduate studies, he earned a M.S. in 2003 with the thesis ''The Interaction of Simulated Squall Lines with Complex Terrain'' and a Ph.D. in 2008 with the dissertation ''The Dynamical Impact of Anvil Shading on Simulated Supercell Thunderstorms''. Meteorology
Meteorology is the scientific study of the Earth's atmosphere and short-term atmospheric phenomena (i.e. weather), with a focus on weather forecasting. It has applications in the military, aviation, energy production, transport, agriculture, construction, weather warnings and disaster management. Along with climatology, atmospheric physics and atmospheric chemistry, meteorology forms the broader field of the atmospheric sciences. The interactions between Earth's atmosphere and its oceans (notably El Niño and La Niña) are studied in the interdisciplinary field of hydrometeorology. OWLeS
The Ontario Winter Lake-effect Systems (OWLeS) was a field project focused on three modes of lake-effect snow: Short- fetch, long-fetch, and downstream coastal and orographic effects. The project was conducted along Lake Ontario in the Great Lakes region and in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. OWLeS occurred in two field phases, one in December 2013 and another in January 2014. Mesonet
In meteorology and climatology, a mesonet, portmanteau of mesoscale network, is a network of automated weather and, often also including environmental monitoring stations, designed to observe mesoscale meteorological phenomena and/or microclimates. Dry lines, squall lines, and sea breezes are examples of phenomena observed by mesonets. Due to the space and time scales associated with mesoscale phenomena and microclimates, weather stations comprising a mesonet are spaced closer together and report more frequently than synoptic scale observing networks, such as the WMO Global Observing System (GOS) and US ASOS. The term mesonet refers to the collective group of these weather stations, which are usually owned and operated by a common entity. Doppler on Wheels (DOW) is a fleet of quickly deployable truck-mounted weather radars managed by FARM (Flexible Array of Radars and Mesonets), an American research company affiliated with the University of Alabama Huntsville. The group, which started as the Center for Severe Weather Research, is led by atmospheric scientist Joshua Wurman, and is partially funded by the National Science Foundation, as part of the "Community Instruments and Facilities" program. The DOW fleet have been used throughout the United States since 1995, as well as occasionally in Europe and South America, to research hazardous and challenging weather phenomena such as tornados.
