Jeff Leiper
Jeffrey Leiper (born 1970) is the current Ottawa city councillor for Kitchissippi Ward. He was first elected in the 2014 Ottawa municipal election, defeating the incumbent Katherine Hobbs. Leiper was born and raised in Ottawa. He studied History and English at the University of Ottawa, and Print Journalism at Algonquin College. As a youth, Leiper was a member of the youth wing of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, though he is now a committed progressive. Leiper first ran for office as a 24 year old in the 1994 municipal elections for a seat on Cumberland Township Council. At the time he was still attending the University of Ottawa. He ran on a platform of higher density developments, the completion of a north-south link between then Highway 17 (now Highway 174) and Highway 417 (which was never built), more parks and the completion of a library. The ''Ottawa Citizen'' is an English-language daily newspaper owned by Postmedia Network in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. History Established as ''The Bytown Packet'' in 1845 by William Harris, it was renamed the ''Citizen'' in 1851. The newspaper's original motto, which has recently been returned to the editorial page, was ''Fair play and Day-Light''. The paper has been through a number of owners. 2018 Ottawa Municipal Election
The 2018 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on October 22, 2018, to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The election was held on the same day as elections in every other municipality in Ontario. The electoral system used is First past the post. Successful candidates do not need to have majority support of the voters in their district. Newswest
''Newswest'' is a community publication serving a number of communities within Canada's National Capital Region. Newswest is a wholly Canadian publication and not related to the 1980s U.S. newspaper NewsWest, previously owned by Tab Communications. Newswest was founded in October 1978 with help from the ''Canada Works'' federal program of the time. Early on, it moved its headquarters into the old Westboro Community Centre on Dovercourt Avenue for 5 years prior to that property's conversion to a recreation centre. When the neighbouring Hintonburg News ceased operation, Newswest expanded its coverage into the now defunct Elmdale Ward in 1998. Newswest is one of the longest surviving community newspapers in Ottawa. Hintonburg
Hintonburg is a neighbourhood in Kitchissippi Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, located west of the Downtown core. It is a historically working-class, predominantly residential neighbourhood, with a commercial strip located along Wellington Street West. It is home to the Parkdale Farmer's Market, located along Parkdale Avenue, just north of Wellington. Its eastern border is the O-Train Trillium Line, just west of Preston Street, with Centretown West / Somerset Heights neighbourhood to the east. To the north it is bounded by the transitway (originally the Canadian Pacific Railway main line), along Scott Street, with Mechanicsville beyond. Wellington Street West
Wellington Street West is a 2.3 km road and shopping area west of downtown Ottawa, Ontario. This road was once connected to - and is often confused with - the prominent Wellington Street in downtown Ottawa. But the two Wellingtons were severed in the 1960s with the expropriation of LeBreton Flats and the demolition of the viaduct that connected them over the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. Ottawa Road 174, formerly Ottawa-Carleton Regional Road 174 and commonly referred to as Highway 174, is a city-maintained road in the City of Ottawa which serves the eastern suburbs of Orléans and Cumberland. Katherine Hobbs
Katherine Hobbs is a former Ottawa city councillor of Kitchissippi Ward. She won the ward in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election, defeating the incumbent Christine Leadman, and was defeated by Jeff Leiper in 2014. Hobbs lived in the Hintonburg neighbourhood of the city, and was raised in Ottawa. She graduated from the University of Ottawa in Business Administration and received a certification in Internet Marketing from the University of British Columbia. Prior to being elected, she worked for Novotech Technologies from 2003. She has also worked for Bell Canada, Nortel, Aastra Telecom and Scotiabank. Cumberland, Ontario
Cumberland is a former municipality and now geographic township in eastern Ontario, Canada. It was an incorporated township from 1800 to 1999, when it was incorporated as the City of Cumberland, then ceased to be a separate municipality in 2001, when it was amalgamated into the city of Ottawa. It now exists only as a geographic township. History Cumberland was originally incorporated as a township in 1800 as part of Russell County. It took its name from the Duke of Cumberland (later King of Hanover).
