Jeff Gelb is an American writer and editor. He won the 2005 Bram Stoker Award for Best Anthology with Del Howison for the book ''Dark Delicacies: Original Tales of Terror and the Macabre''. Awards and nominations In 2005, Gelb and co-editor Del Howison published ''Dark Delicacies: Original Tales of Terror and the Macabre'' (Carroll and Graf), which included stories by Ray Bradbury, Clive Barker, F. Paul Wilson, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, David J. Schow, Steve Niles, Roberta Lannes, Gahan Wilson, and more. The book went on to win the 2005 Bram Stoker Award for Best Anthology. Gahan Wilson
Gahan Allen Wilson (February 18, 1930 – November 21, 2019) was an American author, cartoonist and illustrator known for his cartoons depicting horror-fantasy situations. Biography Wilson was born in Evanston, Illinois, and was inspired by the work of the satiric '' Mad'' and ''Punch'' cartoonists, and 1950s science fiction films. His cartoons and prose fiction appeared regularly in ''Playboy'', ''Collier's'' and ''The New Yorker'' for nearly 50 years. He published cartoons and film reviews for ''The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction''. From 1992 through end of publication, he prepared all the front covers for the annual book ''Passport to World Band Radio''. Wilson was a movie review columnist for '' The Twilight Zone Magazine'' and a book critic for ''Realms of Fantasy'' magazine. Shirley Jackson Award
The Shirley Jackson Awards are literary awards named after Shirley Jackson in recognition of her legacy in writing. These awards for outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror and the dark fantastic are presented at Readercon, an annual conference on imaginative literature. Writing in '' Salon'' in 2010, Laura Miller noted, "The awards are only 3 years old, but have already proved a fitting tribute to a writer who roamed freely over similar ground and has never quite gotten the respect she deserves." Award-winners are selected by a jury of professional writers, editors, critics and academics, with input from a Board of Advisors. Bram Stoker Award
The Bram Stoker Award is a recognition presented annually by the Horror Writers Association (HWA) for "superior achievement" in dark fantasy and horror writing. History The Awards were established in 1987 and have been presented annually since 1988, and the winners are selected by ballot of the Active members of the HWA. They are named after Irish horror writer Bram Stoker, author of the novel ''Dracula'', among others. Several members of the HWA—including Dean Koontz—were reluctant to endorse such writing awards, fearing it would incite competitiveness rather than friendly admiration. The HWA therefore went to lengths to avoid mean-spirited competition, they agreed to specifically seek out new and neglected writers and works, and officially issue Awards not based on "best of the year" criteria, but "for superior achievement", which allows for ties. Roberta Lannes
Roberta Lannes (born December 1948) is an American writer of literary, mystery and horror fiction as well as articles, essays, reviews and poetry. Lannes was born in Los Angeles, California where her father did financial management for small production companies formed by actors in the entertainment industry. Her early horror fiction often explored family relationships and abuse, and its frequently graphic nature led to Lannes's early involvement in the Splatterpunk movement. Her story "Goodbye Dark Love" is considered a classic in the genre, and her work also paved the way for later female writers of horror fiction. Her later work tends toward the mysterious and the psychological. Lannes has published more than fifty short stories, often in anthologies edited by British editor Stephen Jones. Horror is a genre of fiction which is intended to frighten, scare, or disgust. Horror is often divided into the sub-genres of psychological horror and supernatural horror, which is in the realm of speculative fiction. Literary historian J. A. Cuddon, in 1984, defined the horror story as "a piece of fiction in prose of variable length... which shocks, or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces a feeling of repulsion or loathing". Horror intends to create an eerie and frightening atmosphere for the reader. Often the central menace of a work of horror fiction can be interpreted as a metaphor for larger fears of a society. Steve Niles (born June 21, 1965) is an American comic book author and novelist, known for works such as '' 30 Days of Night'', '' Criminal Macabre: A Cal McDonald Mystery'', '' Simon Dark'', ''Mystery Society'', and '' Batman: Gotham County Line''. He is credited among other contemporary writers as bringing horror comics back to prominence. Early life Niles was born in Jackson, New Jersey on June 21, 1965. He was raised in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, developing various creative interests in music, writing, and making amateur films.
