Jeanne Gapiya-Niyonzima
Jeanne Gapiya-Niyonzima (born 12 July 1963, in Bujumbura) is a human rights activist from Burundi. She is the chair and founder of the National Association for Support for HIV-Positive People with AIDS (ANSS) and was the first person from the country to publicly admit they had HIV. Biography Gapiya-Niyonzima trained as an accountant initially, but found her first employment at a pharmacy in Burundi's capital city. In 1987, she married her husband and in 1988 when she was pregnant with her second child, her first child was diagnosed as HIV positive. At her doctor's insistence her pregnancy was terminated and she was also diagnosed as HIV positive. Her first child died aged eighteen months; her husband died of AIDS soon after in 1989. In 1993 after the death of her sister and brother, she tested positive for HIV. In 1994, Gapiya-Niyonzima became the first person from Burundi to publicly declare that they were HIV positive. Bujumbura
Bujumbura (; ), formerly Usumbura, is the economic capital, largest city and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. Bujumbura was formerly the country's political capital. In late December 2018, Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow through on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economical capital and center of commerce. Health In Burundi
Burundi is one of the poorest African countries, burdened by a high prevalence of communicable, maternal, neonatal, nutritional, and non-communicable diseases. The burden of communicable diseases generally outweighs the burden of other diseases. Mothers and children are among those most vulnerable to this burden. Civilians in Burundi have lived through years of conflict due to the civil war, leaving many civilians facing economic crisis. The government has had limited capacity to invest in the health system, so the health infrastructure is poor. The link between health and poverty is undeniable. Many Burundians do not have access to primary health care. Despite this, the Human Rights Measurement Initiative finds that Burundi is fulfilling what it should be for the right to health based on income levels. HIV-positive people, seropositive people or people who live with HIV are people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus which if untreated may progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
