Jean Turner
Jean McGivern Turner (born 23 December 1939) is a Scottish medical doctor and former independent (politician), Independent politician. She was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Strathkelvin and Bearsden (Scottish Parliament constituency), Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency from 2003 Scottish Parliament election, 2003 until 2007 Scottish Parliament election, 2007. Early life and education Turner was born in Glagow on 23 December 1939. She attended Hillhead High School before going on to study medicine at the University of Aberdeen, graduating with an Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBChB in 1965. Career Medical career After qualifying as a doctor, she worked as an anaesthetist registrar at the Southern General Hospital, then for 25 years as a general practitioner in the Springburn area in Glasgow. Strathkelvin and Bearsden is a United Kingdom constituencies, constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Scottish Parliament Building, Holyrood). Springburn
Springburn () is an inner-city district in the north of the Scottish city of Glasgow, made up of generally working-class households. Springburn developed from a rural hamlet at the beginning of the 19th century. Its industrial expansion began with the establishment of a chemical works by Charles Tennant on the newly opened Monkland Canal at nearby St. Rollox in 1799, which later became part of the United Alkali Company. Later in the 19th century, the construction of railway lines through the area led to the establishment of railway works and the village became a parish in its own right. The Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway first opened in 1831 to supply the St Rollox Chemical Works and the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway was opened in 1842. Later, the City Union Line was extended to Springburn in 1871, and the Hamiltonhill Branch Line opened in 1894. This is a list of independent MSPs. It includes all members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) who sat as independent politicians in the Scottish Parliament. , only three people have ever been elected to the Scottish Parliament as independent candidates. Dennis Canavan and Jean Turner were independents throughout their time in the Parliament. Margo MacDonald was elected in 1999 as a Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate, but sat as an independent after her expulsion in early 2003, and was re-elected three times as an independent candidate. Kieran Deeny
Kieran Deeny (born 12 October 1954) is a Northern Irish politician, footballer, and doctor. Deeny was a Designated Other Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for West Tyrone (MLA) from 2003 to 2011, having run on a single issue ticket of retaining the Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh. Early life Deeny was born in Downpatrick where he attended St. Patrick's Boy's Primary School and then St Patrick's Grammar School. 2001 Strathkelvin And Bearsden By-election
The 2001 Strathkelvin and Bearsden by-election was a by-election held for the Scottish Parliament constituency of Strathkelvin and Bearsden on 7 June 2001, the same day as the UK general election and also a Scottish Parliament by-election in Banff and Buchan. It was caused by the resignation for health reasons of the constituency's MSP, Sam Galbraith. The Labour Party retained the seat with Brian Fitzpatrick winning for them. He faced a strong challenge from Dr. Jean Turner who stood as an "independent" candidate trying to save the local Stobhill Hospital.
