Jean Philippe Vogel
Jean Philippe Vogel (9 January 1871 in The Hague – 10 April 1958 in Oegstgeest), popularly known by his initials J. Ph. Vogel, was a Dutch Sanskritist and epigraphist who worked with the Archaeological Survey of India from 1901 to 1914 and later, as Professor in the University of Leiden. In the ASI Vogel worked as Superintendent of the Punjab, Baluchistan, and Ajmer based at Lahore from January 1901 to 1914. Between 1910 and 1911, he even deputised as Director General of ASI in the absence of John Marshall. As archaeologist, Vogel participated in excavations in Gandhara, the Punjab Hill States, Kusinagara and Mathura. John Marshall (archaeologist)
Sir John Hubert Marshall (19 March 1876, Chester, England – 17 August 1958, Guildford, England) was an English archaeologist who was Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1902 to 1928. He oversaw the excavations of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, two of the main cities that comprise the Indus Valley Civilisation. Personal history and career Marshall was at school at Dulwich College before King's College, Cambridge, where in 1898 he won the Porson Prize. He then trained in archaeology at Knossos under Sir Arthur Evans, who was rediscovering the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. Under the sponsorship of the British School in Athens, where he attended from 1898 to 1901, he participated in excavations.
