Jean Duclos
Jean Duclos was a French politician. Born in Louey ( Hautes-Pyrénées) on 15 February 1895, he died there on 27 June 1957. Member of the French Communist Party, like his better known brother Jacques Duclos, he was deputy for Seine-et-Oise. Biographical elements The original profession of Jean Duclos was horticulturist but, like many men of his generation, the First World War marked him morally as well as physically. Grievously wounded in September 1916, he retained for the rest of his life scars on his face and damaged vision. At the end of the war, decorated with the Légion d'honneur, Croix de Guerre, Médaille militaire, but invalided out with an invalidity rate of 100%, he could not perform his job. He adhered to two organisations: the Association républicaine des anciens combattants ( ARAC ) and the French Communist Party. Liberation Of France
The liberation of France in the Second World War was accomplished through diplomacy, politics and the combined military efforts of the Allied Powers, Free French forces in London and Africa, as well as the French Resistance. Nazi Germany invaded France in May 1940. Their rapid advance through the undefended Ardennes caused a crisis in the French government; the French Third Republic dissolved itself in July, and handed over absolute power to Marshal Philippe Pétain, an elderly hero of World War I. Pétain signed an armistice with Germany with the north and west of France under German military occupation. Pétain, charged with calling a Constitutional Authority, instead established an authoritarian government in the spa town of Vichy, in the southern '' zone libre'' ("free zone"). The Popular Front (french: Front populaire) was an alliance of French left-wing movements, including the communist French Communist Party (PCF), the socialist French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) and the progressive Radical-Socialist Republican Party, during the interwar period. Three months after the victory of the Spanish Popular Front, the Popular Front won the May 1936 legislative election, leading to the formation of a government first headed by SFIO leader Léon Blum and exclusively composed of republican and SFIO ministers. Blum's government implemented various social reforms.
