Jean Bernoulli
Johann Bernoulli (also known as Jean in French or John in English; – 1 January 1748) was a Swiss mathematician and was one of the many prominent mathematicians in the Bernoulli family. He is known for his contributions to infinitesimal calculus and educating Leonhard Euler in the pupil's youth. Biography Early life Johann was born in Basel, the son of Nicolaus Bernoulli, an apothecary, and his wife, Margarethe Schongauer, and began studying medicine at University of Basel. His father desired that he study business so that he might take over the family spice trade, but Johann Bernoulli did not like business and convinced his father to allow him to study medicine instead. Johann Bernoulli began studying mathematics on the side with his older brother Jacob Bernoulli. Johann Rudolf Huber
Johann Rudolf Huber (21 April 1668 – 28 February 1748) was a Switzerland, Swiss portrait artist. Among his famous subjects were Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach, Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor and Albrecht von Haller . Biography Huber was born as the son of a landlord in Basel. There, in Bern, Venice and Rome he learned to paint. In 1699 he was appointed court painter at the court in Stuttgart. He did portraits of nearly 5,000 of his contemporaries. He died in Basel. Brachistochrone Problem
In physics and mathematics, a brachistochrone curve (), or curve of fastest descent, is the one lying on the plane between a point ''A'' and a lower point ''B'', where ''B'' is not directly below ''A'', on which a bead slides frictionlessly under the influence of a uniform gravitational field to a given end point in the shortest time. The problem was posed by Johann Bernoulli in 1696 and solved by Isaac Newton in 1697. The brachistochrone curve is the same shape as the tautochrone curve; both are cycloids. However, the portion of the cycloid used for each of the two varies. More specifically, the brachistochrone can use up to a complete rotation of the cycloid (at the limit when A and B are at the same level), but always starts at a Cusp (singularity), cusp. Bernoulli Family
The Bernoulli family ( ; ; ) of Basel was a Patrician (post-Roman Europe), patrician family, notable for having produced eight mathematically gifted academics who, among them, contributed substantially to the development of mathematics and physics during the Early Modern Switzerland, early modern period. History Originally from Antwerp, a branch of the family relocated to Basel in 1620. Nicolaus Bernoulli (also spelled Nicolas or Nikolas; in Basel – 29 November 1759 in Basel) was a Swiss mathematician and was one of the many prominent mathematicians in the Bernoulli family. Biography Nicolaus Bernoulli was born on in Basel. He was the son of Nicolaus Bernoulli, painter and Alderman of Basel. In 1704 he graduated from the University of Basel under Jakob Bernoulli and obtained his PhD five years later (in 1709) with a work on probability theory in law. His thesis was titled ''Dissertatio Inauguralis Mathematico-Juridica de Usu Artis Conjectandi in Jure''. In 1716 he obtained the Galileo-chair at the University of Padua, where he worked on differential equations and geometry. Johann II Bernoulli
Johann II Bernoulli (also known as Jean; 18 May 1710, Basel – 17 July 1790, Basel) was the youngest of the three sons of the Swiss mathematician Johann Bernoulli. He studied law and mathematics, and, after travelling in France, was for five years professor of eloquence in the university of his native city.
