Jean-Pierre Montminy
Jean-Pierre Montminy (23 October 1934 – 14 March 2017) was a Canadian military bandmaster and clarinetist. Life and career He was born in October 1934 in Saint-Gilles, Quebec, just east of Montreal. Upon graduation secondary school, he entered the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal where he was a clarinet student. He began his military career in the Regular Force in 1955, serving in the HMCS Cornwallis and Stadacona Bands as well an army band in London, Ontario for the next 20 years. In 1975, he graduated from the assistant director of music course at CFB Esquimalt, immediately upon graduating becoming the Assistant Director of Music of the Royal Canadian Regiment Band from 1975-1976 and later as Director of Music of the band 1978-1980, having served in the latter position while at the rank of a Captain. Bandmaster
A bandmaster is the leader and conductor of a band, usually a concert band, military band, brass band or a marching band. British Armed Forces In the British Army, bandmasters of the Royal Corps of Army Music now hold the rank of staff sergeant, warrant officer class 2 or warrant officer class 1. A commissioned officer who leads a band is known as the director of music. Directors of music are all former bandmasters who have been commissioned. All bandmasters initially joined the Army as musicians and were selected for bandmaster training from non-commissioned rank (usually having reached the rank of at least corporal). Canadian Forces School Of Music
The Canadian Forces School of Music, CFSM (French language: École de musique des Forces canadiennes, EMFC) was an educational institution that supported the music branch and all Canadian military bands in the Canadian Forces. It was created in 1954 in Esquimalt, British Columbia for musicians of the Royal Canadian Navy, with the school being the Canadian equivalent of the United States Armed Forces School of Music and the Royal Military School of Music. In 1961, the school was expanded and rebranded to include musicians from the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force, and by the time of the Unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in February 1968, the school had officially been renamed to the CFSM. For its entire existence, the CFSM was located at CFB Borden in Ontario and offered enrolled students with a two-year educational program until it was disestablished in 1991.
