Jazz Refreshed
Jazz Refreshed (stylised as jazz re:freshed) is a contemporary jazz record label in London whose roster includes Shabaka Hutchings, SEED Ensemble, Nubya Garcia, and Rosie Turton. History In 2017 the organisation appointed Yvette Griffith as executive director. Griffith had been with the organisation as a consultant since 2013, helping them to win Arts Council funding. In 2019, Griffith won the h100 award for services to music and was awarded an OBE in the 2024 New Years Honours List for services to Cultural Philanthropy and to Music. Griffith stepped down as CEO in 2024, after being appointed CEO of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Jazz Refreshed promote and publish young British jazz musicians. They have run a showcase at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, for a number of years. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Shabaka Hutchings
Shabaka Hutchings (born 1984), also known simply as Shabaka, is a British jazz musician, composer and bandleader. He leads the band Shabaka and the Ancestors, and formerly led Sons of Kemet before its dissolution in 2022. He was also a member of The Comet Is Coming, performing under the stage name King Shabaka. Hutchings has played saxophone and other wind instruments with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, Polar Bear, Melt Yourself Down, Heliocentrics, London Brew and Zed-U. Background and early years Hutchings was born in 1984 in London, England, but moved to Birmingham at the age of two. From the age of six, he was raised in his parents' native Barbados. SEED Ensemble
SEED Ensemble are a 10-piece British jazz ensemble led by Cassie Kinoshi. In 2019, they were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. ''Metro'' has described them as part of a "new wave of British jazz". SEED Ensemble's trumpet player, Sheila Maurice-Grey also plays with Kinoshi in the groups Kokoroko and Nérija''.'' Shirley Tetteh plays guitar for both SEED Ensemble and ''Nérija,'' while tuba player Theon Cross also plays with Shabaka Hutchings in Sons of Kemet. Maurice-Grey also collaborates with Little Simz, while former keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones plays with jazz group Ezra Collective. Nubya Garcia
Nubya Nyasha Garcia (born 1991) is a British jazz musician, Saxophone, saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Early life and education Garcia was born in 1991 in Camden Town, London, the youngest of four siblings, to a Guyanese people, Guyanese mother, a former Civil service, civil servant, and a British Trinidadian Filmmaking, filmmaker father. Garcia followed her three older siblings to the local Camden Saturday Music Centre at the age of five, where she first learned the violin and later played the viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO). Garcia's upbringing by her stepdad, a Brass instrument, brass player, and music loving mother, coupled with the music activities at Camden School for Girls, meant she was exposed to multiple genres of music. The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), established as the London Schools' Jazz Orchestra in 1965, is a British jazz orchestra. History The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) was founded in 1965 by Bill Ashton. Based in the Royal Arsenal, London, England, NYJO started life as the London Schools' Jazz Orchestra, and evolved into the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2010, Mark Armstrong took over as music director of the flagship performing band, and artistic director of the organisation; Bill Ashton became life president, and Nigel Tully became executive chair. South By Southwest
South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and Convention (meeting), conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas. It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. Yussef Dayes (born 12 December 1992) is an English jazz drummer, composer, and record producer. He is known for his work with keyboardist Kamaal Williams, releasing the 2016 album '' Black Focus'' as the duo Yussef Kamaal and with English singer and guitarist Tom Misch, releasing the 2020 collaborative album '' What Kinda Music''. Dayes released his debut solo album '' Black Classical Music'' on 8 September 2023. Personal life Dayes was born in South London on 12 December 1992. Ezra Collective
Ezra Collective are a British jazz quintet composed of drummer and bandleader Femi Koleoso, bassist TJ Koleoso, keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi, and tenor saxophonist James Mollison, who met at the jazz youth programme Tomorrow's Warriors and formed their group soon afterwards. The group fuses elements of afrobeat, Calypso music, calypso, reggae, Hip hop music, hip-hop, Soul music, soul and jazz, and frequently collaborates with fellow London-based jazz musicians such as Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd.
