Jaylen Elijah Mahoney (born November 19, 2000) is an American professional American football, football Safety (gridiron football position), safety for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Vanderbilt Commodores football, Vanderbilt Commodores. College career During Mahoney's five-year collegiate career from 2019 to 2023, he appeared in 54 games, where he notched 247 tackles with 17 being for a loss, four sacks, 18 pass deflections, four interceptions, a forced fumble, and four fumble recoveries. Professional career After not being selected in the 2024 NFL draft, Mahoney signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. On August 27, 2024, Mahoney was released during final roster cuts but signed to the team's practice squad the following day. Safety (S), historically known as a safetyman, is a position in gridiron football on the American football positions#Defense, defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety (FS) and the strong safety (SS). Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field.
