Romana Javitz
Romana Javitz (January 28, 1903–January 1980) was an American artist, librarian, and Superintendent of the Picture Collection at the New York Public Library. Biography Early life Romana Javitz was born in Russia to Polish parents and immigrated to America in 1906. Her mother, Malvine, was a hat milliner and her father, Elias, maintained an import/export business. She grew up in the Bronx and the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She studied painting at the Art Student's League and began working at the New York Public Library (NYPL) in the Children's Room in 1919. Career Javitz was interested in how libraries and museums documented folk art and brought attention to the documentation of African-American folk art at the NYPL after viewing European cities documentation in the 1920s. In 1928, she became superintendent of the Picture Collection at the NYPL. She held the position until she retired in 1968. Jacob Emden
Jacob Emden, also known as Ya'avetz (June 4, 1697 April 19, 1776), was a leading German rabbi and talmudist who championed Orthodox Judaism in the face of the growing influence of the Sabbatean movement. He was acclaimed in all circles for his extensive knowledge. Emden was the son of the hakham Tzvi Ashkenazi, and a descendant of Elijah Ba'al Shem of Chełm. He lived most his life in Altona (now a part of Hamburg, Germany), where he held no official rabbinic position and earned a living by printing books. His son was Meshullam Solomon, rabbi of the Hambro Synagogue in London who claimed authority as Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom from 1765 to 1780. Dan Jawitz (born 1960) is a South African film and television producer. He is the co-founder of Ice Media and he with Mark J Kaplan were both producers on A Lion's Trail which won 27th annual News and documentary Emmy Award. Career Jawitz started in the industry as a publicist on the film Kini and Adams which was selected for Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival (1997) and nominated for a Palme d’Or. Marian Ann Borris Javits, sometimes Marion (1925 – February 28, 2017) was an American arts patron. She was married to the politician Jacob K. Javits from 1947 until his death in 1986. Early life She was born Marian Ann Borris in Detroit, Michigan. She had dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress, but instead moved to New York to work as a researcher for the Republican Party. Ze'ev (Wolf) Yavetz (Jawitz, Javetz) ( he, זאב יעבץ, 26 September 1847 – 24 January 1924) was a Jewish historian, teacher and Hebrew linguist. Biography Ze'ev (Wolf) Yavetz was born in Kolno in the Russian Empire (today in Poland). He published his first historical article in '' HaShahar'', a Hebrew monthly published by Peretz Smolenskin. In 1887, at the age of 40, he immigrated to Ottoman Palestine. Zvi Yavetz
Zvi Yavetz (26 April 1925 – 7 January 2013) was an Israeli historian. He was a professor of ancient history at Tel Aviv University. Biography Zvi Zucker (later Yavetz) was born in Czernowitz, Ukraine. When he was five years old, he was diagnosed with polio and his father committed suicide. After the German occupation in 1941, he was sent to a concentration camp. His relatives, including his mother, were murdered, but he survived the Holocaust and escaped in 1944. Arriving in Turkey, he was transferred to Cyprus and eventually reached Mandatory Palestine. Initially, Yavetz joined a kibbutz in the Jordan valley. Then he left to study modern history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. While at university, Yavetz worked as a teacher for deaf and speech impaired children.
