Jaunjelgava Municipality
Jaunjelgava Municipality () is a former municipality in Selonia, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Sece parish, Sērene parish, Staburags parish, Sunākste parish and Jaunjelgava town with its countryside territory, with the administrative centre being Jaunjelgava. In 2010 Jaunjelgava parish was created from the countryside territory of Jaunjelgava town. The population in 2020 was 5,061. On 1 July 2021, Jaunjelgava Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Aizkraukle Municipality. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (, ''novads'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, valstspilsēta''). The municipalities are also further divided into 71 cities/towns (''pilsētas'', '' pilsēta'') and 512 parishes (''pagasti, pagasts''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional. In response, the Saeima decided to preserve the existence of Varakļāni Municipality as a 43rd local government unit until 2025. Jaunjelgava
Jaunjelgava (, literally "New Jelgava"; ) is a town on the left bank of the Daugava River in Aizkraukle Municipality, in the Selonia region of Latvia, about 80 km southeast of Riga. The population in 2020 was 1,762. History There is no evidence that territory of a modern Jaunjelgava had been inhabited before 15th century. However, a selonian Sērene hillfort existed from the modern town. A country estate Vecsērene manor was established around 1450 not far from modern town. During the 15th century the territory of the town was used as a place where merchants from Riga would transport their goods from boats to carriages because, due to the Daugava rapids, it was difficult to navigate further downstream. Unity (Latvia)
Unity (, V) is a liberal-conservative political party in Latvia. It is a member of the New Unity alliance and is positioned on the centre-right on the political spectrum. Merger (politics)
A merger, consolidation or amalgamation, in a political or administrative sense, is the combination of two or more political or administrative entities, such as municipalities (in other words cities, towns, etc.), counties, districts, etc., into a single entity. Staburags Parish
Staburags Parish () is an administrative unit of Aizkraukle Municipality in the Selonia region of Latvia. Covering 58.5 km2 on the forested left bank of the Daugava River where it widens into the Pļaviņas Reservoir, the parish is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Selonia with just 327 residents as of January 2024. The parish takes its name from the now-submerged Staburags cliff, an 18-metre travertine formation that was a Latvian cultural and natural landmark until it was flooded in 1965 during the construction of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric dam. The parish features a memorial ensemble at the former Vīgante Manor estate that commemorates the lost cliff through interpretive displays, walking paths, and cultural elements honouring both the natural formation and its place in Latvian literature and music. Sunākste Parish
Sunākste Parish () is an administrative unit of Aizkraukle Municipality in the Selonia region of Latvia. It covers 109 km2 of gently rolling farmland and mixed woodland in the northern foothills of the Augšzeme Highlands, part of the historical Selonia region. Its administrative centre is the linear village of Sunākste; other settlements include Lielsunākste and Pikslauki. According to the Central Statistical Bureau, the parish had 366 residents on 1 January 2024, giving a population density of just 3.4 inhabitants per square kilometre. Created as a local government unit during Latvia's first republic, Sunākste Parish was dissolved in the 1949 Soviet reform, re-established in 1990 and attached to Jaunjelgava Municipality in 2009.
