Jasliq
Jasliq (, , ) is an urban-type settlement of Qońırat District in Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan. It is connected by road to Qaraqalpaqstan Karakalpakstan, officially the Republic of Karakalpakstan, is an autonomous republic and part of Uzbekistan. It spans the northwestern portion of Uzbekistan. Its capital is Nukus (' / ). Karakalpakstan has an area of , and has a population of ... in the northwest, and Kunkhodzha in the southeast. Its population was 3,791 people in 1989, and 4,600 in 2016. Jasliq contains the notorious Jaslyk Prison, where in 2010, the Independent Human Rights Defenders of Uzbekistan reported the deaths of 39 prisoners. Jaslyk Prison
Jaslyk Prison (, ) was a detention facility in Jasliq, Karakalpakstan in north-west Uzbekistan where human rights activists and ex-inmates alleged that torture was widespread. Former prisoners include Muzafar Avazov, who was apparently boiled to death. The prison, officially known by the codename UYA 64/71, was located in a former Soviet military base once used for testing chemical warfare protection equipment. It was established in 1999. The prison was opened to contain thousands of people arrested following bombings in the capital, Tashkent, and as of 2012 held 5,000–7,000 people according to Human Rights Watch.
