Jarred Rome
Jarred Daniel Rome (December 21, 1976 – September 21, 2019) was an American discus thrower. His personal-best throw was 68.76 meters, achieved on August 7, 2011, in Chula Vista. He was the Throws Coach at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated in 2000 from Boise State University and was inducted into the Boise State Hall of Fame in 2007. Achievements Jarred won the 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. This was his 4th consecutive world championship berth. His throw of 63.99m or 209 feet 11 inches gave him his first USA championship win. In college at Boise State University he had both the Indoor and Outdoor Shot Put (I62'6) (O63'11.75) and Outdoor Discus (210'00) school records and was the runner up in the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletics At The 2001 Summer Universiade
At the 2001 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China between 27 August and 1 September. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition. Amongst the gold medallists for the host country were Dong Yanmei, who won golds in the women's 5000 and 10,000 metres races, and 18-year-old Liu Xiang in the 110 metres hurdles. It was Liu's first gold on a world stage and he became the 2004 Olympic champion in world record time three years later. The 10th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), were held in the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki, Finland (6 August 2005 – 14 August 2005), the site of the first IAAF World Championships in 1983. One theme of the 2005 championships was paralympic events, some of which were included as exhibition events. Much of the event was played in extremely heavy rainfall. Background Bidding The original winning bid for the competition was for London but the cost to build the required stadium at Picketts Lock and host the event was deemed too expensive by the government. The men's discus throw competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens was held at the Olympic Stadium on 21–23 August. It was originally planned to hold the discus throw at the Ancient Olympia Stadium, but it was discovered that the field was not large enough to accommodate the range of modern discus throwers, and would have posed a danger to spectators. As such, it was decided to move the discus throw and to hold the shot put at the ancient stadium, despite the fact that the shot put was not contested at the Ancient Olympic Games. Thirty-nine athletes from 26 nations competed. Hungary's Róbert Fazekas had initially finished first in the final, but committed an anti-doping breach for failing to submit a proper urine sample during the drug test and was thereby not allowed to present his gold in the medal ceremony, resulting to his disqualification.
