Jaques Limited
Jaques Limited was an engineering manufacturing company based in Melbourne, Australia, which was founded by Edward Jaques in 1888. Jaques' family had fled Revolutionary France and eventually immigrated to Australia in 1876. In 1885 Edward finished his engineering apprenticeship in Melbourne prior to forming a company with Edwin Phillips as Phillips and Jaques, producing rock crushers for quarries. The partnership was dissolved in 1888 and Edward went into partnership with his brother Wallace in 1917 as Jaques Brothers Proprietary Limited. Jaques Brothers became a public company in 1949, and on 22 March 1973 it changed its name to Jaques Limited. It was taken over by Clyde Industries Ltd on 19 September 1979. The firm became a world leader in the design and manufacture of stone crushers as well as producing road making machinery and excavators. Clyde Engineering
Clyde Engineering was an Australian manufacturer of locomotives, rolling stock, and other industrial products. It was founded in September 1898 by a syndicate of Sydney businessmen buying the Granville factory of timber merchants Hudson Brothers. The company won contracts for railway rolling stock, a sewerage system, trams and agricultural machinery. In 1907 it won its first contract for steam locomotives for the New South Wales Government Railways. By 1923 it had 2,200 employees. After contracting during the depression it became a major supplier of munitions during World War II. In 1950 it was awarded the first of many contracts for diesel locomotives by the Commonwealth Railways after it was appointed the Australian licensee for Electro-Motive Diesel products. The City Loop (originally called the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop or MURL) is a piece of underground commuter rail infrastructure in the central business district (CBD) of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The loop includes three underground stations: Flagstaff, Melbourne Central (formerly Museum) and Parliament. The loop connects to Melbourne's two busiest stations, Flinders Street and Southern Cross, and together with the Flinders Street Viaduct forms a ring of four individual tracks around the CBD. A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole" or a "worm", is a machine used to excavate tunnels. TBMs are an alternative to drilling and blasting methods and "hand mining", allowing more rapid excavation through hard rock, wet or dry soil, or sand (although each requires specialized TBM technologies). TBM-bored tunnel cross-sections extend up to (through June 2023). TBM tunnels are typically circular in cross-section, but may also be square or rectangular, or U- or horseshoe-shaped.
