Jang Sa-ik
Jang Sa-ik (born 1949) is a popular South Korean singer. His music combines elements of popular music, jazz, and Korean traditional music. In particular, the style of ''pansori'' can be heard throughout Jang Sa-ik's music. Jang Sa-ik was born in Gwangcheon-eup, Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do, He spent his childhood listening to his father and his uncle playing traditional music on the ''taepyeongso'', a traditional Korean oboe. Spending his childhood in the countryside, he grew to love the sounds of "Nongak", a traditional Korean music form associated with farm life. Jang Sa Ik spent over 25 years doing odd jobs in various towns across Korea, but he found himself longing for the sounds of his childhood. Finally, in 1980, following in his father's footsteps, he began to study the taepyeongso. He made his debut at the age of 46, at which time he was working as an electronics salesman. Aegukga
"" (), often translated as "The Patriotic Song", is the national anthem of South Korea. It was adopted in 1948, the year the country's government was founded. Its music was composed in the 1930s and arranged most recently in 2018; its lyrics date back to the 1890s. The lyrics of "Aegukga" were originally set to the music of the Scottish song " Auld Lang Syne" before Ahn Eak-tai composed a unique melody specifically for it in 1936. Before the founding of South Korea, the version set to the music of "Auld Lang Syne" was sung, as well as when Korea was under Japanese rule by dissidents. The version set to the melody composed by Ahn Eak-tai was adopted as the national anthem of the Korean exile government, which existed during Korea's occupation by Japan from the early 1910s to the mid-1940s. ''Arirang'' ( ) is a Korean folk song. There are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of the song, all of which include a refrain similar to "arirang, arirang, arariyo" (""). It is estimated that the song is more than 600 years old. "Arirang" is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible cultural heritage, Intangible Cultural Heritage list, having been submitted for inclusion first by South Korea in 2012 and then by North Korea in 2014.
