Janet Beavin Bavelas
Janet Clare Beavin Bavelas ( Helmick; February 12, 1940 – December 12, 2022) was an experimental social psychologist who studied gesture, contributing to our understanding of face-to-face interaction. An American, educated in the U.S., her entire career was spent in Canada. Education and career Janet Clare Helmick was born February 12, 1940, in Portland, Oregon. She earned a B.A. in Psychology, an M.A. in Communication, and a Ph.D. in Psychology, all from Stanford University. She worked as a research assistant, then research associate, at the Mental Research Institute from 1961 to 1970, during her M.A. and Ph.D. studies. She accepted a position in psychology at the University of Victoria in Canada in 1970, where she rose from Assistant Professor to Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, and later Associate Dean of Research. Facial expression is the motion and positioning of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. These movements convey the emotional state of an individual to observers and are a form of nonverbal communication. They are a primary means of conveying social information between humans, but they also occur in most other mammals and some other animal species. Humans can adopt a facial expression voluntarily or involuntarily, and the neural mechanisms responsible for controlling the expression differ in each case. Voluntary facial expressions are often socially conditioned and follow a cortical route in the brain.
