Jane Gibson
Audrey Jane Gibson (née Pinsent; October 5, 1924 – June 10, 2008) was a British-American microbiologist and biochemist who worked in the field of photosynthetic bacteria. She discovered that selenium is required by the metabolism of coliform bacteria and described a new species of sulphur bacterium in the genus ''Chloroherpeton''. She became a Professor at Cornell University in 1979 and was editor of the scientific journal ''Applied and Environmental Microbiology''. Early life Born Audrey Jane Pinsent on October 5, 1924 in Paris, daughter of Gerald Hume Saverie Pinsent (1888–1976), whom later became comptroller-general of the UK National Debt Office. Cyanobacteria ( ) are a group of autotrophic gram-negative bacteria that can obtain biological energy via oxygenic photosynthesis. Quentin Gibson
Quentin Howieson Gibson Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (9 December 1918 – 16 March 2011) was a Scottish American physiologist, and professor at the University of Sheffield, and Cornell University. Education Gibson earned a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1944 and a Ph.D. in 1946, from Queen's University Belfast. Life Gibson taught at the University of Sheffield from 1947. Whilst at the University of Sheffield Gibson met Jane Gibson, Audrey Jane Pinsent in 1951. They married, started a family, and eventually had four children. Jane Gibson continued working part-time whilst raising her family. In 1963 they emigrated to the United States, where she took up positions, first at the University of Pennsylvania. Cytochromes are redox-active proteins containing a heme, with a central iron (Fe) atom at its core, as a cofactor. They are involved in the electron transport chain and redox catalysis.
