Jane Brunner
Jane Brunner is a former member of the Oakland City Council, a position she held from 1996 to 2013. Brunner is a former president of the council, a post she held for two years. She was Chair of the Community and Economic Development Committee. Brunner holds a BA in Philosophy from University of California, Berkeley, and a JD from University of California Hastings College of the Law. She is an attorney at Siegel & Yee and has been a civil rights and labor attorney in private practice for over twenty years, with extensive experience in mediation and negotiation resolving complex, multi-party issues. She led in the fight to adopt Measure DD that raised $198 million for open space projects on the estuary waterfront, at Lake Merritt, and along Oakland creeks. Oakland City Council
The Oakland City Council is an elected governing body representing the City of Oakland, California. Since 1998, Oakland has had a mayor-council government. The mayor is elected for a four-year term. The Oakland City Council has eight council members representing seven districts in Oakland with one member elected at-large; council members serve staggered four-year terms, and are all elected using instant-runoff voting. The mayor appoints a city administrator, subject to the confirmation by the City Council, who is the chief administrative officer of the city. Mediation is a structured, interactive process where an impartial third party neutral assists disputing parties in resolving conflict through the use of specialized communication and negotiation techniques. 2011 Oakland General Strike
The 2011 Oakland general strike was a demonstration held in Oakland, California on November 2, 2011 as part of the larger Occupy Oakland movement. Demonstration Thousands of protesters gathered at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to participate in rallies, marches, and teach-ins designed to empower citizens and to draw attention to what they regard as problems with economic inequity and corporate greed. Several local unions expressed support for the demonstration, including Service Employees International Union Local 1021, Oakland Education Association, International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 10, and United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Lake Merritt
Lake Merritt is a large tidal lagoon in the center of Oakland, California, just east of Downtown. It is surrounded by parkland and city neighborhoods. It is historically significant as the United States' first official wildlife refuge, designated in 1870, and has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1963, and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966. The lake features grassy shores, several artificial islands intended as bird refuges and an interpretive center called the Rotary Nature Center at Lakeside Park.
