Jan Sobotka
Jan Sobotka (born 25 July 1961) is a Czech politician who has served as Mayor of Vrchlabí since 1998 and Senator from Trutnov since 2018. Biography Sobotka studied Brno University of Technology. He finished his studies in 1988. He worked at Agrostav D. Králové n.L. and in 1990 he started his own business. Political career Sobotka was a member of the Civic Democratic Party in 1990s and in 1994 he was elected a member of Vrchlabí municipal assembly. He became Mayor of Vrchlabí in 1998. He was an independent candidate nominated by Freedom Union (US). He ran as candidate of US for Senate in 2008 senate election but wasn't elected. Sobotka ran in 2018 by-election in Trutnov district. Senate Of The Czech Republic
The Senate (), literally "Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic", is the upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The seat of the Senate is Wallenstein Palace in Prague. Structure The Senate has 81 members, chosen in single-seat constituencies through the two-round system. If no candidate receives a majority of votes in the first round, there is a second round between the two highest-placed candidates. The term of office for Senators is six years, and elections are staggered so that a third of the seats are up for election every two years. The Mayors and Independents ( cs, Starostové a nezávislí), abbreviated to STAN, is a liberal political party in the Czech Republic that is focused on localism and subsidiarity. The party grew out of four minor parties, including Independent Mayors for the Region, which allied itself with the liberal-conservative SNK European Democrats, and cooperated with the similarly liberal-conservative TOP 09 until 2016. It holds 33 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and is the third strongest party by number of seats following the 2021 election. 2018 Trutnov By-election
A by-election for the Trutnov Senate seat in the Czech Republic was held over two rounds in January 2018. The first round was held on 5 and 6 January 2018, with the second round on 12 and 13 January. The front-runners in the election were Jan Sobotka, supported by right-wing parties, and Jiří Hlavatý, the candidate of ANO 2011. Both of these candidates qualified for the second round held on 12 and 13 January 2018, which was won by Sobotka with 67% of votes.
