Jan-Jaap Sonke
Jan-Jaap Jakobus Sonke is a Malawian architect, mechanical engineer and politician and was Member of Parliament in Malawi from 1999 until 2004. He is a Malawian of Dutch descent. He is a former Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, and of Public Works of Malawi. He was fired for not supporting Bakili Muluzi's third term bid, as was Joe Manduwa Deputy Minister of Agriculture. Career Sonke worked in Kenya as a volunteer in the Coffee Industry assisting Cooperative Coffee Societies from 1966 till 1968. After that studied Architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. He moved to Malawi in 1975 to work as an architect for the churches in the Christian Service Committee. Sonke joint the Malawi Housing Corporation as chief architect in 1979, but simultaneously started his own company ECO systems ltd producing solar water heaters, which he managed eventually full time from 1986. Malawi
Malawi (; or aláwi Tumbuka: ''Malaŵi''), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the north and northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south and southwest. Malawi spans over and has an estimated population of 19,431,566 (as of January 2021). Malawi's capital (and largest city) is Lilongwe. Bakili Muluzi
Elson Bakili Muluzi (born March 17, 1943 in Machinga, Nyasaland) is a Malawian politician who was the first freely elected president of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. He was also chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) until 2009. He succeeded Hastings Kamuzu Banda as Malawi's president. He also served in Banda's cabinet as minister without portfolio, before retiring in 1980. Presidency Muluzi was the candidate of the opposition UDF in the May 1994 presidential election, the country's first multiparty election. He won the election with 47% of the vote, defeating Malawi's leader since independence, Hastings Kamuzu Banda. There was no provision for a runoff election in Malawi, so this was enough for him to end Banda's 33-year rule (dating back to when Malawi was still a British colony). Joe Manduwa
Joe Manduwa (born 1960 in Chimbalanga village under traditional authority Dambe in Neno, Southern Region, Malawi) is a Malawian politician. He served as a deputy minister and Member of Parliament of Malawi for Mwanza East for the United Democratic Front. He is most remembered for advocating the legalization of ''chamba'', Malawi Gold. He is described as bold, frank, and rogue. Political career He became a Member of Parliament under the United Democratic Front ticket in 1999. He became Deputy Minister of Agriculture in the Bakili Muluzi administration. He later became the Deputy Minister of Agriculture. The United Democratic Front is a political party in Malawi founded in 1992 by Bakili Muluzi. It claims to be a liberal party in Malawi and is mainly strong in the southern region populated by ethnic Yao. Bakili Muluzi was President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004.
