On 13 February 2023, the Government of India's Ministry of Mines announced that the Geological Survey of India had discovered 5.9 million tonnes lithium ore, in the Himalayan foothills at Salal-Haimana, Reasi in the near vicinity of Bhimgarh castle, built by legendary Indian general Zorawar Singh as his residence. The single finding alone will ranked it at the time as 7th largest known reserve in the world. The deposits are in clay, as opposed to hard rock or brine, where commercial extraction has as of yet not been proven. Stalled Auction On 2 May 2023, Ministry of Mines secretary Vivek Bharadwaj announced that an auction to assign mining rights was planned on priority basis by December 2023. Jay Mala
Jay Mala (22 August 1958 – 26 April 2023) was an Indian journalist, politician, advocate and social activist. She was a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India, who filed over 600 cases and won each one, including a 1985 landmark case where she sued the State of Jammu and Kashmir changing tort law in India. Mala was co-founder of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) in 1982. On 7 May 2022 she became Chairperson of the Panthers Party Working Committee, and was de facto president of Panthers Party from 31 May 2022 to 4 April 2023. During the period of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, she was one of only seven female candidates, out of a total 512 candidates in the 1983 Jammu and Kashmir general election. Bhim Singh (politician)
Bhim Singh (17 August 1941 – 31 May 2022) was an Indian politician, activist, lawyer and author. He was executive chairman of State Legal Aid Committee, founded by Chief Justice Bhagwati, for over 40 years from 1982 till his demise. During which he was chief legal counsel to two heads of states Saddam Hussein and Slobodan Milošević during wartime and freed hundreds of prisoners for free. He was the founder, president and chief patron of the socialist and secular Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP). Singh was Panthers Party chairman for 30 years from 1982 to 2012, chief patron from 2012-2021, and president from 14 February 2021 – 31 May 2022. The 2019–2021 Jammu and Kashmir lockdown was a curfew, lockdown and Censorship in Kashmir, communications blackout imposed throughout Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir (union territory), Jammu and Kashmir following the Revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, revocation of Article 370 in August 2019.
