Jamiroquai
Jamiroquai ( ) are an English acid jazz and funk band from London. Formed in 1992, they are fronted by vocalist Jay Kay, and were prominent in the London-based funk and acid jazz movement of the 1990s. They built on their acid jazz sound in their early releases and later drew from Rock music, rock, disco, Electronic music, electronic and Latin music genres. Lyrically, the group have addressed Social justice, social and environmental justice. Kay has remained the only constant member through several line-up changes. The band made their debut under Acid Jazz Records but subsequently found mainstream success under Sony Music, Sony. ''Travelling Without Moving'' is the third studio album by English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai, released on 28 August 1996 in Japan, then on 9 September 1996 in the United Kingdom under Sony Soho Square. Front-man Jay Kay intended for the album to have a more universal style, revolving around "cars, life and love". Critics have generally praised the album for being more focused and refined than the band's previous work, while others panned its lyrics and found the album too derivative. Its visual concept of sports cars received backlash from press, as it contradicted Kay's professed environmental beliefs. The album was Jamiroquai's American breakthrough. ''Synkronized'' is the fourth studio album by English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai. It was released on 8 June 1999 by Work Group in the United States, and on 14 June 1999 by S2 Records in the United Kingdom. Bassist Stuart Zender left the band during recording, and Nick Fyffe was hired as a replacement. The album contains funk, acid jazz and disco elements. The album reached number one in the UK Albums Chart and number 28 in the US ''Billboard 200''. The UK version of the album includes the bonus track " Deeper Underground", which was released as a single the previous year and became Jamiroquai's only number-one single in the UK. Background The album's recording sessions began at Jay Kay's Buckinghamshire home studio, Chillington, in 1998. ''Emergency on Planet Earth'' is the debut studio album by English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai, released on 14 June 1993 under Sony Soho Square. Prior its release, the band debuted in 1992 with " When You Gonna Learn" under Acid Jazz Records, and front-man Jay Kay was given a major-label deal with Sony Music. The album was produced as Toby, Stuart and Kay formed the band and is characterised by its acid jazz foundations, layers of instrumentation and socially charged lyrics. Critical reviews of the album were generally positive and noted its 1970s stylings. It reached number one in the UK Albums Chart and sold over 1,200,000 copies worldwide. ''A Funk Odyssey'' is the fifth studio album by English funk band Jamiroquai. The album was released on 29 August 2001 in Japan, 3 September 2001 in the United Kingdom by Sony Soho Square and 11 September 2001 by Epic Records in the United States. Jason "Jay" Kay (born Jason Luís Cheetham, 30 December 1969) is a British singer and songwriter. In 1992, he co-founded the acid jazz and funk band Jamiroquai and still serves as their lead vocalist. As of 2017, the band had sold more than 26 million albums worldwide. "Deeper Underground" is a single by British funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai from the soundtrack to the 1998 film ''Godzilla''. The song was also included as a bonus track on the group's fourth studio album, ''Synkronized'', as well as on the special edition of the group's fifth album, ''A Funk Odyssey'' (2001). Stuart Patrick Jude Zender (born 18 March 1974) is an English bassist. He is best known as a former member of the band Jamiroquai. Biography Early life Zender was born in Sheffield, England. He comes from a family with a musical background: Zender's father was a musician, his uncle was a flamenco guitarist, and his older sister participated in punk bands. His family relocated to Norristown, Pennsylvania, when Zender was seven years old. He moved back to England at age 15, where he attended Leighton Park School in Reading, UK, for a year in 1988–89 before being expelled. Matt Johnson (born 3 February 1969) is a British keyboardist who plays for the funk and jazz band Jamiroquai. Biography Johnson was aged one and a half when he started playing the piano at his family home. "My dad was a musician, so there was always music playing in the house; but I remember being taught by a scary old piano teacher, who must have been over 90 years old". His influences range from Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis through to Squarepusher. Before playing in Jamiroquai, Johnson was a writer and performer for bands Sunray—with whom Kym Mazelle recorded a cover of "Perhaps"—and Nu Hope. Nick Fyffe
Nick Fyffe (born 14 October 1972) is an English bassist, known for being an ex-bassist of English funk group Jamiroquai. He replaced Stuart Zender in 1998 for the recording of "Deeper Underground" (Jamiroquai's only UK number-one single) and their 1999 album ''Synkronized''. He was in the process of applying to a Jamiroquai tribute band when he got the offer to join Jamiroquai. Fyffe recorded and toured with the band until his departure in 2003. Since his departure from Jamiroquai, Fyffe has been lecturing at various colleges and playing with the English electronic group The Shapeshifters as well as blues rock band The Temperance Movement, whose self-titled first album was released on 16 September 2013. Paul Turner (born 11 March 1968 in Sunderland) is an English musician who has been the bassist of the jazz-funk band Jamiroquai since 2005. Music career Turner joined the jazz-funk band Jamiroquai in 2005 and has co-written, recorded and performed live with the band ever since.
