Jamillah James
Jamillah James (born 1980) is an American curator. She is the Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Early life and education James grew up in New Jersey. Her mother was a musician. Her early interest in music and film provided one way into the world of visual art. James attended Columbia College Chicago, where she was in the first class to study art history. She graduated in 2005. While in Chicago for college, James founded a DIY, live/work experimental music venue called Pink Section and later lived at the exhibition space Archer Ballroom, where she organized live music performances. Career Before moving to Los Angeles, James was an independent curator and held curatorial fellowships at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2012-2014) and the Queens Museum (2010). Sarah Cain
Sarah Cain (born 1979), is an American contemporary artist. Life Cain was born in 1979 in Albany, New York, and grew up in nearby Kinderhook (town), New York, Kinderhook. She moved to California in 1997 to study art at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts, BFA in 2001. She went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving her MFA in studio art and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2006. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Work Cain uses a variety of materials, including traditional canvas, stretcher bars, and paint, as well as less common artifacts, including musical notations, leaves and branches. Kandis Williams is an artist, writer, editor, and publisher stationed both in Berlin and Los Angeles. Williams has received critical acclaim for her collage art, performance art, and publishing work. She is best known for her art exploring racial issues, nationalism, and many other categories. Biography Youth and Education Williams was born in 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. The New Museum of Contemporary Art is a museum at 235 Bowery, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker. History The museum originally opened in a space in the Graduate Center of the then-named New School for Social Research at 65 Fifth Avenue. The New Museum remained there until 1983, when it rented and moved to the first two and a half floors of the Astor Building at 583 Broadway in the SoHo neighborhood. Nina Chanel Abney is an American artist, based in New York. She was born in Harvey, Illinois. She is an African American contemporary artist and painter who explores race, gender, pop culture, homophobia, and politics in her work. Personal life In 2015, Abney said that she and her father started to rebuild their relationship. After a fire at their home, Abney and her mother moved in with her aunt in Matteson, Illinois where she attended Rich South High School. Abney said that she would get teased about "talking white" by other students. In order to connect with other students, she would take requests to draw "portraits of famous black figures in pop culture". Abney began to explore art more formally in high school. Nayland Blake
Nayland Blake is an American artist whose focus is on interracial attraction, same-sex love, and intolerance of the prejudice toward them. Their mixed-media work has been variously described as disturbing, provocative, elusive, tormented, sinister, hysterical, brutal, and tender. Education and life Nayland Blake attended Bard College in Annandale-On-Hudson, for its B.F.A. program from 1978 to 1982 and then moved to California. They attended the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, for its M.F.A. program, from 1982 to 1984.
