Jamie Cann
Jamie Charles Cann (28 June 1946 – 15 October 2001) was a British Labour Party politician who was the Leader of Ipswich Borough Council from 1979 to 1991, before being elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich at the 1992 general election, a seat he held until his death in 2001. Early and family life He was educated at Barton-upon-Humber Grammar School and Kesteven College of Education. He then became a primary school teacher, serving as deputy headmaster of Handford Hall Primary School in Ipswich from 1981 to 1992. Political career Cann voted against equalising the age of consent for same-sex relations. In 1998, he was fined £1,000, and disqualified from driving for eighteen months for drink driving. Renowned as an MP with acerbic wit, he spent most of his time campaigning in the constituency. The Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Ipswich (UK Parliament constituency), Ipswich in Suffolk, Jamie Cann, of the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party died on 15 October 2001. The by-election was held on 22 November that year, and was the first of six by-elections which took place during the 53rd Parliament (2001–05). It was also the only British parliamentary by-election to take place in 2001. With Labour still basking in the glow of their 2001 United Kingdom general election, landslide general election victory just five months earlier, no opposition party was able to mount an effective challenge. The Liberal Democrats (UK), Liberal Democrats improved their position somewhat but remained in third place, and the Labour candidate Chris Mole was returned with a majority of over 4,000 votes. Ravenswood is a district within Ipswich, in the Ipswich district, in the county of Suffolk, England. It is sited on the old Ipswich Airport to the south-east of the town. The area has grown rapidly due to private housing development. The old airport building has been transformed into small flats, and part of the terminal has been redeveloped for commercial purposes. 1172 homes have been built on the site so far, with a few hundred more to be built in the coming years, along with a planned sports park. The estate is bound to the north by Nacton Road, bound to the west and south west by Gainsborough Sports Centre and the Orwell County Park.
