James Woodhouse (chemist)
James Woodhouse (17 November 1770 in Philadelphia – 4 June 1809 in Philadelphia) was an American surgeon and chemist. Biography He was the son of English emigrants to the British America. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1787, and from its medical department in 1792. In 1791 he served as a surgeon in General Arthur St. Clair's expedition against the Native American in the North West Territory. When Joseph Priestley declined to accept the chair of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1795, Woodhouse received the appointment, which he held until his death. He is said to have been the first to demonstrate the superiority of the Lehigh anthracite coal in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, over the bituminous coals of Virginia for intensity and regularity of heating power. James Woodhouse (poet)
James Woodhouse (1735–1820) was an English poet from the Black Country village of Rowley Regis. He was known as the "shoe-maker poet" from his trade that supported him during his early years. He made the acquaintance of the poet William Shenstone, who lived nearby, and was encouraged by him to write poetry. In 1764 a collection of his poems was published with the financial assistance of his friends and he acquired some fame as a writer of "humble" beginnings. He acquired literary patrons, the most of important being the "bluestocking" Elizabeth Montagu, who also became his employer. After a dispute with Montagu, he left her service and his final years were spent in London, where he set up a bookselling business. He died in 1820 and was buried at the cemetery of St George's Chapel, near Marble Arch in London. James Thomas Woodhouse, 1st Baron Terrington (16 July 1852 – 8 February 1921), known as Sir James Woodhouse, from 1895 to 1918, was an English Liberal Party politician. Woodhouse was the son of James Woodhouse of Flamborough, Yorkshire. He served as the member of parliament (MP) for Huddersfield from 1895 to 1906, and was also a Railway and Canal Traffic Commissioner from 1906 to 1921 and Chairman of the Losses under Defence of the Realm Commission from 1915 to 1921. He was knighted in 1895, and on 19 January 1918 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Terrington, of Huddersfield in the County of York Yorkshire ( ) is an area of Northern England which was historically a county. David Woodhouse, 4th Baron Terrington
Major James Allen David Woodhouse, 4th Baron Terrington (30 December 1915 – 6 May 1998), was a Baron in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and Deputy Chairman of Committees in the House of Lords. He was a member of the London Stock Exchange and a director of S J Carr and County (Gunmakers) Ltd. He served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment and Queen's Westminster Rifles and was wounded in World War II. Woodhouse was the son of Horace Woodhouse, 3rd Baron Terrington, and Valerie Phillips, and was educated at Winchester College and then at Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He married Suzanne Irwin, daughter of Colonel Thomas Strutt Irwin, on 7 November 1942. They had three daughters. On his death in 1998, having no male heirs, was succeeded by his brother, Montague Woodhouse, who became the 5th Baron.
