James Walter Chapman-Taylor
James Walter Chapman-Taylor (24 June 1878 – 25 October 1958) was a New Zealand architect. One of the country's most important domestic architects of his time, he is noted mainly for his Arts and Crafts-influenced houses. Chapman-Taylor was also a skilled craftsman, builder, furniture designer and photographer, and had a keen interest in astrology. Early days James Walter Chapman-Taylor was born in London in 1878 to Theodore Chapman-Taylor and his wife, Ada Thomas. In 1879 Theodore migrated to New Zealand where he purchased land a few miles south of Stratford in the Taranaki region. Ada, James and a younger brother joined him in June 1880, with the family subsequently becoming dairy farmers. Whare Ra
Whare Ra is a building in Havelock North in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand. The building housed the New Zealand branch of the magical order the Stella Matutina. It was designed and overseen by James Chapman-Taylor, a senior member of the order. Whare Ra was one of the last surviving temples that could trace its lineage back to the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It was the only temple to operate in a permanent, purpose-built building. Early preparations The foundations for the Order in New Zealand were laid by Reginald Gardiner (1872-1959). Judy Siers
Judith Shelby Siers (born 1937) is a New Zealand writer and historian. In 2008 she won a Montana New Zealand Book Award. Biography In 1981 a film made by her and her husband Jim Siers, titled ''Eye of the Octopus'', sold for more than $500,000 at the Cannes Film Festival to Germany, Britain, South Africa, and Italy. She was the judge of the young writers section at the 1981 Katherine Mansfield Literary Award. In 1994 Siers won a by-election and was elected a member of the Wellington City Council for the Onslow Ward, standing for the centre-right Citizens' Association ticket, she defeated former deputy mayor Helene Ritchie. Re-elected at the next three elections, she was defeated at the 2004 election. She was an inaugural member of the committee that established the Wellington Writers Walk. Stella Matutina
The Stella Matutina (Morning Star) was an initiatory magical order dedicated to the dissemination of the traditional occult teachings of the earlier Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Originally, the outer order of the Stella Matutina was known as ''Mystic Rose'' or ''Order of the M.R. in the Outer''. When occult writer Israel Regardie released documents of the Golden Dawn to the public it was the teachings of the Stella Matutina that he revealed, not those of the original order. The Stella Matutina was one of several daughter organisations into which the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn fragmented, including the Alpha et Omega led by John William Brodie-Innes and Macgregor Mathers, the Isis-Urania Temple led by A.
