James Saunders (dancer)
James Saunders (14 July 1946 in Wilmington, Delaware – 24 August 1996 in Cologne, Germany) was an American dancer, choreographer and movement teacher. Personal life Born and raised as the son of Mary Lee and Major Saunders in Wilmington, Delaware, Saunders studied painting and sculpture at the Philadelphia College of Art (bachelor's degree). In 1968, at the age of 22, Saunders took his first dance class. and studied thereafter ballet with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet Company under the teachers Benjamin Harkavy, :de:Edward Caton, Edward Caton and :de:Héctor Zaraspe, Manuel Héctor Zaraspe. He was later a student of Irene Bartos, Rosella Hightower and Anna Price. In 1973 Saunders left the United States and settled in Europe. Saunders had a fatal accident on August 24, 1996, during an upswing on a stair banister as part of his performance "Basstanz - Bilderwelten" which he performed with the musician Enrique Dias in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Glen Tetley
Glen Tetley (February 3, 1926 – January 26, 2007) was an American ballet and modern dancer as well as a choreographer who mixed ballet and modern dance to create a new way of looking at dance, and is best known for his piece ''Pierrot Lunaire''. Biography Glenford Andrew Tetley, Jr. was born on February 3, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. While in medical school, Tetley found a passion for dance. After graduating from Franklin and Marshall College in 1946, Tetley moved to New York City to study dance. He began his career as a dancer, dancing in Hanya Holm's Broadway production of ''Kiss Me, Kate'' in 1948 and ''Juno'' in 1959, as well as with the New York City Opera Ballet, John Butler's American Dance Theatre, and the Joffrey Ballet where he was an original member. Peter Kowald (21 April 1944 – 21 September 2002) was a German free jazz and free improvising double bassist and tubist. Career A member of the Globe Unity Orchestra, and a touring double-bass player, Kowald collaborated with many European free jazz and American free-jazz players during his career, including Peter Brötzmann, Irène Schweizer, Karl Berger, Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake, Karl E. H. Seigfried, Conny Bauer, Jeffrey Morgan, Wadada Leo Smith, Günter Sommer, William Parker, Barre Phillips, Joëlle Léandre, Alfred Harth, Lauren Newton and Evan Parker. Talley Beatty
Talley Beatty (22 December 1918 – 29 April 1995) was born in Cedar Grove, Louisiana, a section of Shreveport, but grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He is considered one of the greatest of African American choreographers, and also bears the titles dancer, doctor, and dance company director. After studying under Katherine Dunham and Martha Graham, Beatty went on do solo work and choreograph his own works which center on the social issues, experiences, and everyday life of African Americans. Beatty and his technique and style of dancing were both praised and criticized by critics and dancers of his day. Dance background Beatty began studying dance at the age of eleven with Katherine Dunham. He learned her style of dancing, which was heavily based on her African and Caribbean studies of dance in the West Indies. He was a part of Dunham’s company and performed in several shows with them. Christopher Bruce
Christopher Bruce (born 3 October 1945 in Leicester) is a British choreographer and performer. He was the Artistic Director of the Rambert Dance Company until 2002. He has choreographed many pieces from Andrew Lloyd-Webber/Alan Ayckbourn musical Jeeves at Her Majesty's Theatre, London in 1975. In addition to performing and choreographing, he has created many works for Rambert and for Nederlands Dans Theater, Houston Ballet and Cullberg Ballet and has had a long-term association with the English National Ballet and the Houston Ballet. His works include Cruel Garden, Ghost Dances, Sergeant Early's Dream, Swansong, Moonshine, Stream, Shadows, Quicksilver, The World Again, Symphony in Three Movements, Land and Rooster. Heinz Spoerli (born 8 July 1940) is a Swiss dance maker, internationally known. After a long career as a ballet dancer and company director, he is now widely considered to be one of the foremost European choreographers of his time. Early life and training Born in Basel into a prosperous family, Heinz Spörli was exposed to theater arts at an early age, thanks to the enthusiasm of his father. As a schoolboy, he appeared as an extra in a number of local productions and sometimes took small acting or dancing roles. At age 17, he began taking ballet classes with Walter Kleiber, a well-known local teacher, while continuing his formal education. Upon graduation from school, he completed his compulsory military service in the Swiss Army before resuming his dance training.
