James Robert Milne
James Robert Milne PRSSA FRSE ( 1880 – 3 February 1961) was a 20th-century Scottish physicist. He served as president of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts from 1923 to 1925. Life He graduated with a BSc from the University of Edinburgh in 1899. He was an early radio engineer and ran the Edinburgh and District Radio Society from around 1900. In 1904 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were James Gordon MacGregor, Cargill Gilston Knott, William Peddie, and George Chrystal. James Gordon MacGregor, Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS FRSE LLD (31 March 1852 in Halifax (former city), Halifax, Colony of Nova Scotia, British North America – 21 May 1913 in Edinburgh) was a Canadian physicist. He was described as "brilliant, energetic, nervous, impatient", and not suffering fools gladly. Cargill Gilston Knott FRS, FRSE LLD (30 June 1856 – 26 October 1922) was a Scottish physicist and mathematician who was a pioneer in seismological research. He spent his early career in Japan. He later became a Fellow of the Royal Society, Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and President of the Scottish Meteorological Society. Biography Knott was born in Penicuik, Midlothian, the son of Pelham Knott, an agent for a paper manufacturer and his wife Ellen. His paternal uncle was the artist Tavernor Knott. 250px, William Peddie (ca 1910) William Peddie FRSE LLD (31 May 1861 – 2 June 1946) was a Scottish physicist and applied mathematician, known for his research on colour vision and molecular magnetism. Life He was born in Papa Westray in Orkney on 31 May 1861 the son of Rev John Peddie and his wife, Marion Beashe. He was educated at Kirkwall Grammar School. He studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Edinburgh graduating BSc in 1887 and gaining a doctorate (DSc) in 1888. He had been assisting in lectures in Natural Philosophy (Physics) since 1883 and became a formal lecturer in 1892. In 1907 he succeeded J. P. Kuenen as Professor of Physics at University College, Dundee, a post he would hold for 35 years. He wrote numerous scientific papers and several books. George Chrystal FRSE FRS (8 March 1851 – 3 November 1911) was a Scottish mathematician. He is primarily known for his books on algebra and his studies of seiches (wave patterns in large inland bodies of water) which earned him a Gold Medal from the Royal Society of London that was confirmed shortly after his death. Life He was born in Old Meldrum on 8 March 1851, the son of Margaret (née Burr) and William Chrystal, a wealthy farmer and grain merchant. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen. In 1872, he moved to study under James Clerk Maxwell at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He graduated Second Wrangler in 1875, joint with William Burnside, and was elected a fellow of Corpus Christi. Richard Stanfield (23 June 1863 – 10 October 1950) was a British civil engineer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early life Born in England on 23 June 1863, Stanfield was educated at the Manchester Grammar School, Manchester. In around 1877 he began an apprenticeship with the firm John Chadwick and Sons. In 1883, he won a Senior Whitworth Scholarship and then studied mine engineering at the Royal School of Mines in London under Professor Thomas Minchin Goodeve. He also studied metallurgy and assaying under Professor Sir William Roberts-Austen. He won the Bessemer Gold Medal for his class. Robert Stuart Pilcher CBE FRSE (1882–1961) was an early 20th century British transport engineer and influential author on transport policy. He gives his name to the Pilcher: a pullman-style tram serving in Manchester from the 1930s. Life He was born in Liverpool on 28 January 1882. The son of Annie and Edward Pilcher of Irish ancestry, living at 11 Tancred Road. He was educated at Wallasey in Cheshire then was apprenticed as a tram engineer at the Montreal Street Railway Company in Canada.
